WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Americans who have never filed a tax return will need to do so this year in order to claim what’s coming to them under the enhanced child tax credit. Previously, only people who earned enough money to owe income taxes could qualify for the full credit. But as part of the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, President Joe Biden expanded the program, increasing the payments to up to $3,600 annually for each child aged 5 or under and $3,000 for those who are ages 6 to 17. The monthly payments have amounted to $300 for...

Italian police have discovered the mummified remains of a 70-year-old woman sitting at a table more than two years after she died, prompting calls for better care for older people in the country. Marinella Beretta, who had no living relatives, was found in her house in Prestino near Lake Como in northern Italy. Police stumbled upon her remains when they made a house call during high winds in Lombardy, which risked uprooting neglected trees in her garden. She had not been seen by neighbours for at least two and a half years, according to Italian media reports. Her neighbours, who...

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis voiced his support for a bill that would prohibit the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in the state's primary schools. Asked by reporters at a Miami event Monday, he said it was "entirely inappropriate" for teachers to be having conversations with students about gender identity, citing instances of them telling children, “Don’t worry, don’t pick your gender yet," and also "hiding" classroom lessons from parents. “Schools need to be teaching kids to read, to write,” DeSantis said. “They need to teach them science, history. We need more civics and understanding of the U.S. Constitution,...

Inside JET's torus, with superimposed plasma. (UKAEA) Late last century, the Joint European Torus (JET) near Oxford, UK, churned out 22 megajoules of energy in what was, at the time, a record in fusion power. Now, experimental upgrades have brought the facility into line with the technology anticipated for a major international project, resulting in the production of nearly three times that amount of power. The advances are a major step forward for tokamak-based fusion, bringing us ever closer to a balance point where we can harvest a near endless stream of energy without the cost of polluting emissions or...

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) referred to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol as a "violent riot" a day after his party's leader called the episode a "violent insurrection." Rubio, in an interview with NewsNation this week, suggested he disagrees with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) characterization of the Jan. 6 attack, saying "riot" is a more accurate descriptor for the event than "insurrection." "There was no way they were going to overthrow the government," Rubio said of the hundreds of people that descended on the Capitol, some breaching the building and assaulting police officers as lawmakers,...

CARDINAL REINHARD MARX WITH POPE FRANCIS A prominent Roman Catholic Church leader in Germany has said that he believes priests should be allowed to get married, opposing centuries of mandated celibacy for clergy. Cardinal Reinhard Marx, the archbishop of Munich and a reformist ally of Pope Francis, told the German publication Sueddeutsche Zeitung that he supported clerical marriage as part of reforms to battle sex abuse. “For some priests, it would be better if they were married — not just for sexual reasons, but because it would be better for their life and they wouldn’t be lonely,” stated Marx, as...

The beer, with the brand name "Line", is the result of a tie-up between a firm that wants to popularise the algae as a dietary supplement, and a nearby craft brewery that was looking for a way to make its beverages more distinctive. The blue tint comes from spirulina, an algae that is grown in basins by a company called Etika Spirulina in northern France. The component of the spirulina that gives the blue colour, called phycocyanin, is then added to the beer during the brewing process. Tasting a freshly produced bottle of the beer, brewery employee Mathilde Vanmansart described...

CHICAGO – Nearly two months ago, Pastor Corey Brooks proclaimed that race was the least of his community’s problems. Yet so many Americans outside his community would insist that race is the root of its poverty, illiteracy and violence. What these Americans fail to realize is that engaging in race talk or race policies does nothing to uplift or inspire individuals to great heights. If that were true, the pastor’s community would be thriving by now. The only thing race is capable of is oppression at its worse and patronization at its best. One might argue that racial engineering in...

Black History Month is upon us. Some will attempt to use it as a tool to push divisive agendas such as critical race theory or Black Lives Matter. But we must avoid such ideologies and remain focused on what unites us as a nation, regardless of our race. Indeed, it is wrong to assume that Black history must only involve Black Americans. Every moment of greatness in our history belongs to all Americans, because the fruits of those triumphs have blessed all of us. This applies to Washington crossing the Delaware, to the Constitutional Convention, and other events not typically...

Don't look now, but the "Democracy In Peril" channel is breathing heavily about removing "insurrectionists" from the ballot, starting with Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, and then, in the ultimate dream, Donald Trump. Avlon admitted it was a "long ball" to get Cawthorn removed from the ballot. Leftists are trying anyway (note CNN chyron just calling them "Activists.") Then he enthusiastically discussed how this could be used to prevent Trump 2024. Eighteen-year-old freeski champion Eileen Gu gave China its first women’s gold medal of the 2022 Winter Olympics on Tuesday, becoming the breakout star of the least-watched Games in TV history. Chinese state media is eager to use Gu for propaganda while protecting her image as a globalist megastar, while American media is reluctant to ask tough questions about why a California teen would put her incredible talent at the service of a genocidal slave-taking dictatorship. Why did a top American athlete who claims to be socially conscious, who benefited tremendously from growing up in the United States, choose to play...

On Feb. 6, the website convoytraitors.ca, initiated by an Ottawa IT specialist, started posting names of companies that had trucks in the protest area, along with photos with the intent of "naming and shaming" those involved. Close to 200 companies were listed as either supporting or having trucks in the convoy as of Tuesday. "By naming and tagging we hope to ensure that any future internet searches reveal the true nature of these businesses," the website reads. A map on the website shows truck companies located across Canada and some headquartered in the U.S. Those behind the website said the...

It was the Left that prematurely pronounced the death of irony 20 years ago:“In the dark days after September 11, Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter famously declared: ‘I think it's the end of the age of irony.’”They have spent the intervening two decades disproving their own thesis. Take, for example, that old skinhead, snake-faced Clinton apologist James Carville. The man with one of the most punchable faces in America…tells his podcast audience (all 25 of them) that he’d like to punch unvaxxed people in the face."I wish what they’d do is pass a law to make you immune from liability...
