Italian police have discovered the mummified remains of a 70-year-old woman sitting at a table more than two years after she died, prompting calls for better care for older people in the country.
Marinella Beretta, who had no living relatives, was found in her house in Prestino near Lake Como in northern Italy. Police stumbled upon her remains when they made a house call during high winds in Lombardy, which risked uprooting neglected trees in her garden.
She had not been seen by neighbours for at least two and a half years, according to Italian media reports.
Her neighbours, who had not seen Beretta since September 2019, assumed she had moved away at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which hit northern Italy in 2020, the reports said. Police found nothing at the scene to suggest foul play...

Sad. RIP.
“Police found nothing at the scene to suggest foul play...”
Did anything in those two years suggest a foul stench?
Wasn’t there like two years worth of mail piling up somewhere?
My probable fate.
So very sad.
Mine too. Beats dying in a hospital bed stuck full of tubes, or languishing in an old folks’ home.
Obviously she wasn’t a renter.
Taxes, utilities, anything else that could have keyed in authorities?
Yeah. I have do admit that, after I have thanked God for all my blessings, I remind him that I’d prefer not die in a hospital.
And I can’t afford an old-folks home.
I hope she wasn’t a cat lady.
I don’t know, but I would think there are people who can be hired to do welfare checks periodically.
What was her FReeper name?................
Sad. To die alone was once my great concern. As I get older it becomes less of one. I still feel compelled to see that nobody or no creature does.
My neighbor down the road has been sick so I’ve called once a day to see that he is OK. He assured me that his family was looking in on him and I didn’t need to call so I quit not to invade his privacy. I found out that his family did not even know he was sick. There is a message there I need to listen to I guess.
Lol. I remember the first time I saw that movie. My hair literally stood up on end.
I thought for a minute they were referring to Pelosi in the House.
Interestingly, she was still able to vote…

AMEN!
I have already told my kids & grandkids, if they ever stick me in an old folks home, I guarantee, I will come back & haunt them until end of time.
... still waiting for her Bridge partner to make their play !!
