Explanation: Aphelion for 2021 occurred on July 5th. That's the point in Earth's elliptical orbit when it is farthest from the Sun. Of course, the distance from the Sun doesn't determine the seasons. Those are governed by the tilt of Earth's axis of rotation, so July is still summer in the north and winter in the southern hemisphere. But it does mean that on July 5 the Sun was at its smallest apparent size when viewed from planet Earth. This composite neatly compares two pictures of the Sun, both taken with the same telescope and camera. The left half was...

Republic . The American republic is in grave danger. We have wandered far from the guiding principles that established our nation and preserved our way of life for more than two centuries. Because Texas was once a republic, its citizens have a unique perspective on the preciousness of independence and the sacrifices that secured our freedoms. We cherish this exceptional system of government and recognize the imminent threats that can destroy what our Founders called “the great experiment” known as the United States of America. For America to endure, every generation must safeguard our constitutional republic and representative democracy from...

The Social Credit Security StateOur woke ruling class intends to use both private and public enterprise to police and punish hearts and minds.President Ronald Reagan famously said, “the nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’” But as I’ve argued, many modern conservatives are now more concerned about Angelo Codevilla’s harrowing description of our new American oligarchy as an amalgam of “public” and “private” enterprise. We must conclude that the new “most terrifying words” are, “I’m from the ruling class, and I’m here to subjugate you.”That, in a nutshell, is...

Recent film program graduates of Columbia University who took out federal student loans had a median debt of $181,000. Yet two years after earning their master’s degrees, half of the borrowers were making less than $30,000 a year. The Columbia program offers the most extreme example of how elite universities in recent years have awarded thousands of master’s degrees that don’t provide graduates enough early career earnings to begin paying down their federal student loans, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Education Department data. Recent Columbia film alumni had the highest debt compared with earnings among graduates of...

A Texas judge earlier this year ordered that a Muslim woman seeking a divorce appear before a tribunal governed by Sharia, a move that her lawyers said was unconstitutional. In March, Collin County District Judge Andrea Thompson ordered that Mariam Ayad, a woman attempting to divorce her husband, Ayad Hashim Latif, forgo the usual legal paths and instead submit to arbitration under a Fiqh panel, governed by a traditional Muslim group based in Saudi Arabia. Thompson's reasoning rested on a prenuptial agreement between the two in which Ayad agreed to allow her marriage to be arbitrated according to Sharia. Ayad...

China is developing underwater AI robots that can hide in the sea and attack enemy vessels with torpedoes without human guidance. The unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) were developed in experiments over a decade ago and successfully managed to use artificial intelligence to find a dummy submarine and attack it with a torpedo. The experiments, conducted in the Taiwan Strait, saw the UUV deployed on a fixed course 30ft below the surface. It was able to identify the location of the submarine, change course, circle the target, and then fire at the dummy with an unarmed torpedo. The UUV used sonar...

Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), issued a warning Thursday, effectively blaming unvaccinated individuals for the rapid spread of the delta variant but admitting that officials expected it to become the dominant strain in the U.S. She also suggested the U.S. turning the corner on the pandemic is contingent upon everyone doing their “part” and getting vaccinated, regardless of their reservations. Speaking virtually at the White House COVID-19 Response Team’s Thursday briefing, Walensky spoke about the current Chinese coronavirus numbers in the U.S., noting the 7-day average of cases has increased 11 percent from...

The University of California-San Francisco is using organs from aborted babies in a federally-funded study. On Tuesday, The Daily Wire reported that researchers at the university harvested genitalia — including “gonads” — for experiments. A subsequent analysis from The Daily Wire showed that UCSF’s Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health supports several programs that have collectively trained thousands of medical students across the United States to perform abortions. Pro-Life San Francisco — which has investigated many of UCSF’s ties to the abortion industry through public records requests — discovered that a May 2021 study at the university experimented upon second-trimester...
