On Thursday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Evening Edit,” former HHS Assistant Secretary Adm. Brett Giroir said it’s “very possible” that the United States funded gain of function research on coronavirus and that this sort of research “is probably still ongoing there and in a number of other labs in China and probably around the world, many of whom we probably fund.” Giroir stated, “I think, very clearly, back in the 2014, 2015 era, the NIH was funding research that was published and we know about it, about gain of function mutations on this type of virus. And I...

The COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States and Europe offer protection against the four main coronavirus variants known to exist, a World Health Organization official says. "All COVID-19 virus variants that have emerged so far do respond to the available approved vaccines," WHO European Regional Director Hans Kluge said Thursday at a news conference. Kluge said the B.1.617 variant now killing thousands of people daily in India, where it was first detected, is of special concern. That variant has spread to all six WHO regions and has been detected in 26 of the 53 nations in the...

As a partially vaccinated America reopens and tries to return to its pre-pandemic ways, several infectious-disease experts and an epidemiologist agree that a major surge of COVID-19 is possible next winter. They disagree, however, on how likely that is and what might cause it. The prediction that we might be heading for another COVID surge was made 2 months ago in a speech and a JAMA article (coauthored with Peter Piot, MD) by Christopher Murray, MD, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in Seattle. Murray's colleague Ali Mokdad, MD, professor of...

Nearly one-fourth of all registered voters turned out for Pennsylvania’s primary election Tuesday. On its face, that’s hardly a register of civic participation to brag about. But taken in the context of the political cycle, it’s really quite good. Sparked by post-pandemic interest in the ballot questions pertaining to the powers of the state legislature during a disaster declaration and, of course, the beginning of the second-year of no-excuse mail-in balloting, turnout actually soared past the usual so-called off-year rates. And it happened in all kinds of counties. In Dauphin County, where there was lots of interest in a spirited...

Previously unseen video footage has been helping scientists learn more about the fate of the airship. One of the 20th Century's most infamous disasters, the destruction of the Hindenburg - a large German passenger airship - occurred following its arrival at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey in May 1937. The huge hydrogen-filled airship was carrying 97 passengers at the time, of which 37 lost their lives when the vessel inexplicably burst into flames and crashed to the ground, bringing with it any remaining confidence in airship travel in general. Although it is obvious that the gas...

In February, the Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a memo interpreting federal prohibitions of sex discrimination in housing to also protect sexual orientation and gender identity.
