A historic church in East Yorkshire will receive a ‘woke’ facelift, by replacing badly-damaged carvings dating back hundreds of years with feminist icons.
Dating back to 1120, St Mary's Church in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, features decorations that have become so heavily eroded that it is impossible to distinguish what they depict. But instead of undergoing traditional restoration work, the church will have some of its artwork replaced with new carvings of female role models, such as Queen Elizabeth, scientist Marie Curie and nursing pioneer Mary Seacole. Some of the original carvings were installed in 1520, when parts of the church were rebuilt.
The church’s vicar, Reverend Rebecca Lumley, received approval for the highly unorthodox refurbishments from an ecclesiastical court, billing the changes as a way to celebrate the achievements of women.
“The contribution of women to humanity isn't always properly recognised in the telling of history, and throughout history women's voices have been silenced,” Lumley said in a statement. She added that she takes seriously the Church of England’s commitment to “battling inequality and injustice” and expressed hope that the new interior design will “help highlight the remarkable achievements of these women, and provide hope and inspiration for future generations.”
The decorations will also be designed to pay homage to members of the BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) community, according to media reports. Other individuals to be carved into the church include airship designer Hilda Lyon, aviator Amy Johnson, astronaut Helen Sharman, and women's rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft.
The Chancellor of the local diocese, Canon Peter Collier, who also serves as a judge for the Consistory Court, said that Lumley had made a strong case for ‘updating’ the church’s carvings.

How did everyone GET so stupid?
What’s Marie Curie’s statue doing in a church? She was a Communist, and by definition, an atheist.
It’s not stupid, it’s malicious.
There's yer problem, right there.
No sure why she had a statue there. But they say she was a very beautiful woman despite being a communist. Apparently she simply glowed.
When did everyone start referring to Madame Curie as Marie Curie?
Yes I know that’s her name. My point is, when I was growing up, she was referred to as Madame Curie, presumeably as a sign of respect. Now, everyone calls her Marie Curie, and I never heard any explanation for the change.
I played in the bell choir there. Beautiful church.
There is a carving of a white rabbit there. And legend has it that was the inspiration for Lewis Carroll writing “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.
Also...the ceiling is covered with a beautiful Cerulean blue with the Constellations.
Absolutely disgusting what the leftists are doing.
Reads like a Babylon Bee headline. But this is actual Babylon at work.
And I bet Beverly Minster has gone the same. My son was Baptized there. It was on the other side of town and we lived in that particular parish.
Feminist icons, like Margaret Thatcher? Er... No.
Also the biggest lavender bushes I’ve ever seen on the entrance.
Tried to grow them here to no avail.
“The contribution of women to humanity isn’t always properly recognised in the telling of history...”
Many many years ago in a land far far away, one of my first community college history courses was titled ‘HERstory” during which the roles of women in history were thoroughly covered. I can’t imagine such courses have ever been dropped. It wasn’t a ‘skate’ class, you needed to know the material, but even so there was high interest in the classes because they were so interesting.
Perhaps England should adopt the text, certainly more informative than a stylized painting of Marie Curie or Eliz 1.
Gynosociety destroys the church
The church of the sacred feminist vagina suits
Yes they walk around in vagina suits
Very sad.
About 1% of Britons go to church and the country seems to have no use for its Christian heritage anymore. The religious pageantry of a royal funeral or wedding, or even the beauty of an Anglican service, once meant something, but now it’s mere theater. It’s a shame what they are doing to this church, but what does it matter in the big picture?
And this from a country that once produced great saints, and gifted the English-speaking world with the KJV, the Book of Common Prayer, and the hymns of Watts and Wesley.
Beverly is just 30 miles south of my ancestral home. My mom’s family emigrated to Canada from there around 1865. I’ve been looking forward to a genealogical tour there for quite some time.
Very funny.
So where are the women who are unrecognized? The women they plan to depict are well recognized for their contributions etc.
