American Girl, a doll and storybook brand beloved by young girls since the 1980s, has released a “2021 Girl of the Year” named Kira whose story featuring aunts in a same-sex “marriage” has taken parents and children by surprise. “Kira's aunts are married lesbians, and that needs to be known by every adult who hands the book to a child or who allows a child to check it out from the library,” said one book reviewer on Amazon. The character Kira, along with her doll avatar, was revealed as “2021 Girl of the Year” on Good Morning America on Dec....

In 2009, I authored an article titled The Narcissism and Grandiosity of Celebrities. Continuing this tradition, this past week on my social media platforms, I critiqued the virtue signaling that members of the privileged classes engage in. Here is what I wrote: “Let me explain yet again the source for all of the platitudinous virtue signaling. The truly privileged elites know that deep down they are frauds. They suffer from existential guilt. Hence, one of the ways by which they assuage the guilt albatross around their necks is to demonstrate to the world that they are truly compassionate, truly loving,...

A Conservative MP has listed prayer alongside grotesque acts such as ‘corrective rape’ as she called on the Government to ban so-called conversion therapy. Writing for The House magazine, Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton, said the “fraudulent and abhorrent practice” must be criminalised, as existing laws do not enable prosecution where no physical harm has been caused. She said any attempt to stop someone from expressing their chosen gender identity or sexual orientation is ‘conversion therapy’, which she said “can range from ‘therapy’ and prayer sessions, to aversive treatments like electroshocks or even ‘corrective’ rape”. Court ordersKearns said...

CV NEWS FEED // The Supreme Court issued a ruling late Friday night that California must immediately allow churches to reopen at 25% of occupancy — ending the state’s ban on indoor worship. The court’s splintered ruling leaves in place some of California’s restrictions, like a ban on singing during worship. Justice Neil Gorsuch noted that California favors its movie industry more than religious believers. “But if Hollywood may host a studio audience or film a singing competition while not a single soul may enter California’s churches, synagogues, and mosques, something has gone seriously awry.” Gorsuch and Justice Clarence Thomas...

Washington D.C., Feb 5, 2021 / 08:05 am MT (CNA).- On Thursday evening, the Senate rejected a measure requiring care for babies who survive abortion attempts. As part of consideration of a budget resolution on Thursday, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) tried to insert an amendment based on his Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. The legislation requires that babies born alive during botched abortions receive the same standard of care that other newborns of the same gestational age would. Sasse’s amendment failed to receive the necessary 60 votes to be included in the budget resolution, receiving only 52 votes in favor...

Mayor Lori Lightfoot rightly wants to turn back Chicago’s troubling exodus of Black residents. But her recent proposal to hold a “reunion weekend” to invite Black folks who have left to just “come back home,” strikes us as a surprisingly naive way for a mayor to recoup a lost population of at least 100,000 people. Lightfoot made the comment, perhaps off the cuff, while moderating a virtual panel that discussed rebuilding wealth on Chicago’s chronically disinvested — and predominantly Black and Brown — South and West sides. Editorials It was a thoughtful discussion but then the mayor came out of...

The unintentional theme of this year's movie columns has been "accidental movies": ones I watched and ended up loving, despite a slow start or homely title. So it's fitting that today I talk about Michael Powell's and Emeric Pressburger's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). Based on its awkward moniker, I'd long assumed that The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp was one of those grimy, eat-your-spinach English anti-war comedies like The Bed Sitting Room and Oh, What a Lovely War. So what was it doing on so many "greatest movies of all time" (or at the very...

Republicans in California are announcing their intentions to run for governor should the recall effort against Democrat Gavin Newsom succeed. The Los Angeles Times reports that businessman John Cox, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and registered independent Mike Cernovich all intend to challenge Newsom. Cox, who lost to Newsom in the 2018 gubernatorial race, cited the Democrat governor’s failed leadership as reason to step in saying, “The state is in crisis.” Faulconer, former mayor of San Diego and whom the Times describes as “the most prominent challengers to Democrat Newsom,” has already raised roughly $1 million for the cause....
