MATTHEW
9:18-26While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.” Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him. After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. News of this spread through all that region.
MARK
5:21-43When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” So Jesus went with him.
While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
LUKE
8:40-56Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.
While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”
They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

#10: Chihuahuas in ancient Judea?..................
#10 is inauthentic, but # 14 has no place in this list of pictures. I might congratulate one of my pre-teen daughters on this, but the older ones would have been told to go back and practice some more.
That surprised me, too. I was surprised there were chihuahuas in 16th Century Italy....
Well, I guess perhaps you could simply ignore it...
That is possible. After the Spaniards conquered Central America, modern day Mexico, the local Chihuahua breed of dog was introduced to Europeans......................
So many lovely pictures. Favorite is # 6 by Polenov. Look at the face of the mother as she sees her daughter open her eyes. What is written on the wall to the right?
#3, there is so much light around and in the Christ that he seems more of an apparition than human.
A fine Bronzino at #20 and a very expressive #32.
Well, I’m glad we’ve resolved that. Of course, European painter were famous for injecting their local culture into paintings depicting events 1,500 miles and 1,500 years away.
The Chihuahua would have been a new type of dog breed then, and I assume was as popular among their ‘patrons’ as they are today.
If Senora Patron wants her cute little doggy in the painting, who am I to say no?.....................I paint the doggy....................
I wonder if, in addition to your objection, you might be just the least bit curious why I included such a jarringly out-of-place image. If you are, I will tell you the most important of several reasons.
I loved the cleverness in #3: so many artists want to endow Jesus with a glow, but this one found a way to do so that seems uncontrived. It's like Lee Remick told George Segal in No Way To Treat A Lady, when he complimented her on her natural beauty: "That's what takes so long."
LOL
I know you don’t evaluate or rate the paintings. You want to expose us to the widest range of interpretations.
My own observation is the painting is in a primitive style.
That said, I’ll bite: why did you choose this painting?
That made this painting absolutely unique and post-worthy among the other 41 images; you will look through them in vain for another. Indeed, looked at that way, I’m not sure it isn’t the single most important painting on the page—the one I can LEAST do without. If it were drawn with crayons, I would include it. I had other less important reasons, too, but I’ll leave it at that.
My goal in this series is simply to illustrate the text. Although the Gospels do not mention Jesus thanking His Father in this instance, they do so often enough to make that expected. If the paintings I post evoke anything, I hope it is understanding of and respect for God’s Word.
Good Morning, Dan! :-)
Good afternoon, Mary-Lou! :-)
Thanks for the insight. I’m an art dilettante, so I miss a lot of things. I focus on artistic style, overall composition, and impact of the painting more than the details. That said, I know every detail was thought out and considered by the artist.
I’m an Art Ignoramus—capital A capital I—who focuses on whether they’re faithful to the text or not. But it’s been fun for me to explore the art, and just as fun to hear from all those knowledgeable about art—you and several others whom I won’t name here because I’d omit someone, but you know who I mean.
