PS3 vs 360… 360 vs PS3… is a very touchy subject as everyone is aware I’m sure. Before this article gets underway its important that everyone keep in mind that neither of these 2 consoles is weak by any stroke of the imagination. Both are very powerful and significant upgrades over their current generation counterparts such as the PS2 or Xbox and as always it’s about the games. What it TRULY boils down to for the vast majority of people out there is that they don’t care about the specs of a console. All most people care about is “How...

TOKYO — Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, which went on sale in Japan over the weekend leading off a global launch, can't play some of the older games for the original PlayStation and the upgrade PlayStation 2, a company official said today. Sony Corp. had billed PlayStation 3 as compatible with the previous PlayStation machines. But Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said some of the 8,000 older games weren't working properly on PS3, making the wrong sounds or images, and some couldn't be played at all. He declined to give a number for the games that weren't functioning, but...

The Worst Game of All Time 1. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (Atari, 1982) Platform: Atari 2600 About a third of the people I quizzed came up with this title almost instantly, and it's not hard to see why. No matter how you rate it, E.T. was a misbegotten product that deserved to be buried. (And, as things turned out, it was. More on that in a minute.) How, you may wonder, does someone screw up the one-two punch of the year's most popular movie and the number one video game console? Through a combination of poor planning and unbridled optimism. Warner...

LOS ANGELES: The video game maker that sparked uproar over a hidden sex scene in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, is courting new controversy with its latest schoolyard title Canis Canem Edit (aka Bully) - featuring boys kissing. That sexual twist came to light only after Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. released the Teen -rated game on October 17, having weathered protests from anti-violence advocates who tried unsuccessfully to block its sale to minors. Bully stars 15-year-old Jimmy Hopkins, who must navigate cliques, fights and young love at his new boarding school, along the way winning brawls, completing missions and plying...

The PlayStation 3 launch is now just over six weeks away, and Sony Corp. stockholders are apparently getting nervous. Today, the Japanese electronic giant's share price slid 130 yen ($1.11) to 4,600 yen ($38.98) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, a decline of 2.75 percent.... Another Tokyo-based analyst, Macquarie Equities' David Gibson, went one step further. He issued a report expressing concern that many of the 200-plus PS3s on the floor of the Tokyo Game Show "operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset," according to the AP. "While the reason for this is unknown, we suspect it may be due...

On October 4, at 10PM Eastern/Pacific, find out what happens when four young Colorado boys go online in World of Warcraft and... oh my God, was that Cartman as a dwarf? ("I'm not a dwarf! I'm big-boned!"). Oh, yes. The residents of South Park are as addicted to World of Warcraft as you guys are. Our four favorite boys - Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny - and even the adults, racing to their own PCs to log on and do glorious battle against each other in the Season 10 premiere... er, although we're thinking Chef (if he were a WoW...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Unbeknownst to many of her peers, 70-year-old Barbara Sainte-Hilaire, MTV's "senior" video game correspondent and star of the blog "Old Grandma Hardcore," is a sensation in video game circles. A video gamer for three decades, the foul-mouthed granny who favors role-playing games and admittedly stinks at sports titles, says she indulges her habit for about 10 hours a day -- significantly more than her 23-year-old grandson, Timothy. She has an extensive collection of game consoles that would turn many teenaged boys green with envy, and has just finished playing a pair of zombie-slaying titles -- "Dead...

Tokyo (Japan) - Problems with the production of Blu-ray's blue laser diode forced Sony to cut the launch availability of its next generation video game console Playstation 3 from 2 million to 500,000 units worldwide, according to report published by AP today. In spite of the production problems, Sony is sticking to the 17 November launch in the U.S., as well as 11 November in Japan. However, the severe shortage has caused Sony to push back the release date in Europe from 17 November to March of 2007. In the U.S., the amount of PS3 units available at launch will...

BATON ROUGE, La. -- A federal judge has blocked a Louisiana law that would ban the sale of violent video games to minors. Judge James Brady said the law violates free speech. "Depictions of violence are entitled to full constitutional protection," Brady wrote in issuing the injunction Thursday. Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed the law in June. It placed a ban on video games sold to minors if an average person would conclude they appeal to a morbid interest in violence. Sellers would face fines of up to $2,000, up to one year in prison or both for selling games found...

Physics has always been part of our games, as the term describes how objects relate to each other and their surroundings. But to render physics in a realistic way, a large number of extremely advanced calculations is required. This demands serious horsepower, which puts more and more strain on the CPU. And as the CPU already handles a lot of other tasks, the idea of a separate hardware unit to take care of physics - just as the GPU handles graphics - has been around for quite a while. Based on that thinking, Ageia created and released their PhysX card....

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When men appear as buxom, scantily clad females in video games like "World of Warcraft," it is more about winning than finding an outlet for a real-world affinity for gender bending. "It has nothing to do with exploration of sexual identity," said Brenda Brathwaite, a game developer who delved into the subject for her book "Sex in Video Games," set for release this fall. While there are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender-friendly groups that operate within massively multiplayer online games commonly referred to as MMOs, issues of sexual orientation take a backseat to slaying beasts or...

Nintendo of America sent President Bush an early baby boomer gift pack today. The bag of presidential goodies includes a DS Lite and a copy of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day. Bush turns 60 tomorrow. I'd make some age/ intellect jokes, but the sheer number of possibilities have temporarily locked-up my snark muscle. Lets just hope that Nintendo didn't put it in one of those electronics-festooned, trumpet flaring boxes. I'd hate to see a Secret Service bomb squad called out to explode such a nice piece of portable gaming.

Following last week's unveiling of a white PSP in Tokyo, we've collected new details and three new photos of the device. Here's what we know so far: The "ceramic white" PSP will be released in Japan on Thursday, September 15, 2005 for 26,040 yen (about $235) in a Value Pack identical to today's save for a white pouch. There's currently no plans to bring it to the U.S. or Europe. In addition to its white body, the device features a white control stick, white speaker grills, but will not have clear D-Pad and face buttons — it instead has opaque...

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- An addiction center is opening Europe's first detox clinic for video game addicts, offering in-house treatment for people who can't leave their joysticks alone. Video games may look innocent, but they can be as addictive as gambling or drugs -- and just as hard to kick, says Keith Bakker, director of Amsterdam-based Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants. Bakker already has treated 20 video game addicts, aged 13 to 30, since January. Some show withdrawal symptoms, such as shaking and sweating, when they look at a computer. His detox program begins in July. It will run four...

THOSE WHO IGNORE HISTORY are doomed to repeat it. One of life's more satisfying ironies, however, is that the same fate often befalls those who fixate on history. Consider the coming train wreck of Sony's PlayStation 3.At this year's annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Sony announced that its next-generation video-game console will begin retailing in November for $599 (or $499 for a stripped-down version). The news rippled through the gaming industry, the consensus being that Sony had doomed its new system with such a high price tag. Traditionally, home video-game consoles have sold for $199 to $299.This news...

It was early afternoon on Sunday, April 2, and eight women were competing fiercely for what could only be described as a female gamer's dream: a spot on Ubisoft's all-women professional video game team, the Frag Dolls. It was the final stage of the competition. For a day and a half, the women pitted their skills as hard-core gamers against one another in a no-holds-barred tournament and interview process. The intensely focused yet collegial competitors looked like they could have been stars in the cast of the teen television hit "The OC." For skeptics, it raised the question: Are they...
