A new report by the Munich-based consulting firm, MECN, GmbH, indicates that the online gaming industry is passing through its toughest challenges ever, and is eyeing "casual gaming," including online bingo, fantasy sports and skill gaming as future growth opportunities.

There are already several online games made to be played for only a few minutes a day. Urban Dead, Kingdom of Loathing... thing is, they're all free to the user and supported by advertising and/or donations. They aren't really there to make money. They tend to be something that someone with some programming knowledge just felt like doing.

Kind of tough to compete with a firm that doesn't care about making a profit.

The main reason casual gaming is more attractive is because as a programmer, you eliminate the need for heavy traffic.

Because you do not need to send constant screen updates, less of the actual code needs to reside on the users' PCs. This limits the hackers ability to cheat.

Also, when updates are needed, it is easier because you only update the server, and not the users' PCs.
