Sony drastically cuts PS3 launch allocation

Tokyo (Japan) - Problems with the production of Blu-ray's blue laser diode forced Sony to cut the launch availability of its next generation video game console Playstation 3 from 2 million to 500,000 units worldwide, according to report published by AP today.

In spite of the production problems, Sony is sticking to the 17 November launch in the U.S., as well as 11 November in Japan. However, the severe shortage has caused Sony to push back the release date in Europe from 17 November to March of 2007. In the U.S., the amount of PS3 units available at launch will be a mere 400,000. Japan will get the remaining 100,000.

My prediction is that they will never recover from this. They miss Christmas, and the competing platforms get a solid customer base. It's betamax all over again.

Hey! Maybe it won't cost so much by the time we actually get them.

Between this and the massive battery recall, it has not been a good past few weeks for Sony.

They do this on purpose... all the parents promise Johnny they will get a playstation 3. Then, at Christmas, they can't find one, so they buy Johhny other stuff. But, they know Johnny's heart is broken. So in January when the stores are flooded with PS3's, they buy Johnny one.

Hmm, I don't know. I think Nintendo stands to benefit from this more (and maybe Microsoft to a smaller extent), especially with the pricing of the Wii, which parents will find much more appealing.

Somehow I don't think so. It wasn't that way when I got the Xbox 2 weeks ago.

Including the blu-ray in the PS3 was just dumb, especially when they could only produce so many blu-ray diodes.

It doesn't help blu-ray adoption, since a lot of the diodes wind up in consoles that people don't plan on using to watch blu-ray movies, and it doesn't help the PS3 since it limits the number they can make (besides making it more expensive to produce).

LOL! I knew it wouldn't be long before someone mentioned Sony's infamous giant enemy crab/massive damage blunder at E3. I'm not sure which has been poked fun at more, the crab, or the pricing of the PS3 (or "Riiiidge Raaacer!!!"). Sony really needs a shakeup in the PR department.
