Sony Stock Slides 2.75 Percent On PS3 Concerns
GameSpot ^ | 10/3/06 | Tor Thorsen

The PlayStation 3 launch is now just over six weeks away, and Sony Corp. stockholders are apparently getting nervous. Today, the Japanese electronic giant's share price slid 130 yen ($1.11) to 4,600 yen ($38.98) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, a decline of 2.75 percent....

Another Tokyo-based analyst, Macquarie Equities' David Gibson, went one step further. He issued a report expressing concern that many of the 200-plus PS3s on the floor of the Tokyo Game Show "operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset," according to the AP.

"While the reason for this is unknown, we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the venue," Gibson said. "We are concerned that such a problem has occurred so close to full production and is clearly negative news for the company."

In its defense, Sony said the PS3 failures were caused by unusually high temperatures created by having many of the next-gen consoles operating in close proximity to each other. "It's not a problem with the PlayStation 3 unit itself," Sony spokeswoman Nanako Kato told the AP. "For a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem."

The downgrades come at a bad time for Sony, which is already coping with a massive recall of laptop batteries it manufactured....

It's interesting to see that the disease that affects large corporations isn't limited to the US. Greed, laziness, shoddy work... Sony is a shadow of what they used to be. I wouldn't buy anything that says Sony now.

So what you're trying to say is that the heat is attacking the PS3's weak point for massive damage?

I'm trying to decide if I want to stand in line for hours to get a Wii as I did with the 360.

The news about yet another Sony laptop battery recall had a lot to do with Sony's stock price slide.

"...result of enclosing the units ..."

Why enclosed?

Wii should be a good system. Instead of bleeding edge graphics and other silliness, they are falling back to something that has been missing from video games for a while....gameplay!!! :) While the technology in PS3 & X360 is impressive, I think Nintendo got it right this time with innovative controllers and the like.

Of course, that is only my opinion...I am sure others would disagree. I think home video game technology peaked (in terms of gameplay) with the Atari 2600 and 8 bit NES, but, again, that is just my opinion :)!

(It is not my intent to trash any programmers out there in the gaming industry by the way...idiots like myself are still trying to understand that the hell a quaternion is :P )

I agree completely about the gameplay. I don't pick up video games for five minute cut scenes and ridiculous storylines - I want to play!

Why enclosed?

Keep them from being stolen? Kind of like the play-testing and demo stands at Target and the like.

I'm going for the Wii myself. Its time to replace my Dreamcast :).

Thanks -- that makes sense. I was thinking that the PS3 box itself wouldn't have any vent holes -- which might make sense; but not if they can't take the heat.

"If I'm not mistaken, the PS3 in all of it's Blu-Ray glory will top out at $599."

Actually, that's a rather cheap price for just a Blu-Ray player; let alone one with a game computer attached. Regardless, you're probably right about the impact of the price on sales.

The PS2 will be adequate for now...FF12 will be released this month - so who needs the PS3 just yet? :-)

The classic NES sold for almost 200$ at launch in the 1980s. adjusted for inflation that's just got to be soemwhere near 600$

Definitely, heating and ventilation around the PS3 should be a problem. Everyone who is interested in getting a PS3 should absolutely NOT buy one until a little later, when they are more durable. My PS1 has to be turned on its side to read discs properly, and my thicker PS2 developed notorious DRE problems (my PS2 slim version on the other hand works like a charm).

Games like FFXIII, White Knight Story and MGS4 have sealed my eventual purchase, but this gen has much life left still.
