The same congressional panel that launched a preliminary inquiry into Weiner-gate this week has been diddling around with several other Democratic ethics scandals for years. These aren't foxes guarding the henhouse. They're sloths guarding the foxhole. The House Ethics Committee is now reportedly probing into Twitter-holic Democratic New York Rep. Anthony Weiner's possible abuse of government resources while sending pervy messages and photos to young women across the country. The latest batch of Weiner's leaked social-media self-portraits -- more cheesecake than beefcake -- showed him in various states of undress at the congressional gym. From what other public buildings has...

Democrats are "increasingly distrustful" of Gov. Spitzer and fear he'll use the same dirty-trick tactics on them as he's used on Republican Leader Joseph Bruno, Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (D-Bronx), a prominent Democrat charged. "......there is a wide and growing dislike of the governor among legislators, who are increasingly distrustful of him....His attacks on Sen. Bruno make many of us feel that if we crossed Spitzer, we could look forward to some of the same type of treatment. The Post revealed Democrat Sen. Malcolm Smith was secretly plotting with Spitzer to seek a tax-evasion investigation of Bruno by the IRS.

The full Senate could consider the Supreme Court nominee within days. Votes are likely to follow party lines, with a few exceptions. WASHINGTON — Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., President Bush's nominee to the Supreme Court, is expected to clear his first congressional hurdle today when the Senate Judiciary Committee votes to recommend his confirmation — setting the stage for consideration in the full Senate as early as this week.

East St. Louis political figure Kelvin Ellis admitted in court Wednesday that he plotted to discredit a potential witness in a vote fraud case against him - but he insisted it was someone else who broached the subject of killing her. The guilty plea to three counts of obstruction of justice marked Ellis' third conviction on federal charges in four months. In June a jury found him and four others guilty of vote fraud; in August he pleaded guilty of tax evasion. Ellis, 55, formerly a Democratic Party leader and director of regulatory affairs for the city, has been jailed...
