President Biden and Vice President Harris took a quick jaunt to Northeast Washington to pick up tacos for Cinco de Mayo on Friday. Their surprise and unplanned trip outside of the White House was to Taqueria Habanero, a Mexican restaurant in the Bryant Street shopping mall. The president ordered a chicken quesadilla, churros and an assortment of tacos for White House staff, according to the White House.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Friday by stepping out for a quesadilla and tacos at a Washington food hall. His unannounced visit prompted one onlooker to remark, “This is the most D.C. thing that’s ever happened to me.” Biden was joined by Vice President Kamala Harris at Taqueria Habanero, in the Edgewood neighborhood of the capital. The president paid in cash for his order and posed with staff for pictures. Aides said Biden ordered a chicken quesadilla and churros, as well as an assortment of tacos for White House staff. No way, Jose!St. Patrick’s Day was cancelled. March Madness was cancelled. Easter was cancelled. But try as you might, you cannot cancel Stinko de Mayo! It’s part of the calendar and you simply can’t cancel a whole day without there being a great disturbance in the universe. So grab your face masks and even if you have to pick up your tacos curbside, prepare to celebrate...

An Iowa appeals board has reversed a judge's ruling that a woman who disparaged Mexicans can claim unemployment benefits because such rhetoric is "common" after President Trump was elected. Angela Diers filed for unemployment after said she was fired from her job at Dexter Laundry after she said in front of co-workers that she hated “f---ing Mexicans," The Des Moines Register reported Wednesday. Administrative Law Judge Beth Scheetz had originally approved Diers's request for aid, saying that derogatory comments about "blacks and foreigners" were commonplace at the commercial washer and dryer manufacturing plant where Diers worked. “Since President Trump’s election,...

Mexicans love mayonnaise. They ordered a huge shipment and a ship sailed from Europe with a full shipment of Mayonnaise. As it was crossing the Bermuda Triangle, it mysteriously began sinking. The captain wired the shipping company in Europe, "we have run into a serious problem in the Bermuda Triangle, and ship is sinking". The captain was not good in Spanish, so he wired port authorities in Mexico, "Sinko De Mayo". Later on it was changed to Cinco de Mayo!

Well, it’s Cinco de Mayo; the great American holiday nestled between Easter and Memorial Day that celebrates guacamole, Mexican beer and Margaritas. I’m not sure if it was Willy Clinton or GW Bush who officially sanctioned it. I think Willy was really more of a hot dog and grinder guy, although he would occasionally enjoy a little burrito when the campaign trail diverted him into the barrio.George W was definitely a Tex-Mex nacho kind of guy, so maybe he’s the one that turned the 5th of May into the Mexican St. Patrick’s Day.By the time Barry and Lady M got to...

Yes, it’s time again for Cinco de Mayo, the leftist, diversity driven holiday, commemorating the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Say again? Yes, that’s the Mexican Army in 1862, 36 years after their fathers slaughtered the Texans at the Alamo. And, the French, of Maginot Line and Fall of France fame. As an American, in 2018, I’m supposed to be excited about all this and spend the day eating Mexican food, drinking Margaritas and watching that foreign, boring and God-awful game, soccer, to celebrate what again – the Mexican...

In an email to the student body, a Gonzaga University administrator cautioned that Cinco de Mayo has become "full of cultural appropriation," directing them to a flyer listing "alternative" ways of celebrating the holiday. "Don't you dare put on that 'sombrero,'" the flyer tells students, suggesting that they "donate to organizations working for immigrant rights" rather than have a party. Another option is to "support AUTHENTIC Mexican businesses" run by "actual Mexican people," though it cautions that "CHIPOTLE DOESN’T COUNT."

Around this time every year, Cinco de Mayo promotions start popping up around the United States, and regrettably now, in many parts of the world. Except the Spanish-heritage world, of course. What? Isn't Cinco de Mayo THE top, all-Hispanic-culture-encompassing "holiday"? Why, it is also around this time that my Spanish-heritage brethren (aka, Hispanics, or the loathsome label, Latinos) start getting Cinco de Mayo greetings from Anglos and others, and start posting their absurd and often hilarious experiences on social media for the enjoyment of us spiks. A Puerto Rican U.S. Air Force Major being designated as the base's Cinco de...

Bar owner Paul Hennessey says he wanted to get people talking. To mark Cinco de Mayo, his Dana Point bar set up an inflatable wall for patrons to climb over — and handed out “green cards” that guaranteed one free drink to those who clambered to the top. Since then, Hennessey’s Tavern has gotten angry phone calls. Yelp reviewers have called the Cinco de Mayo event disgusting, tasteless and racist.

President Andrew Johnson invoked the Monroe Doctrine in February 1866, and demanded that the French leave Mexico There is actually more to the holiday of Cinco de Mayo than great tacos or lively music; there are lessons to be learned hidden within the history of this holiday, which provide deeper understanding of a very perilous time in the Americas. Today Cinco de Mayo has taken on a more political significance in light of Donald Trump’s campaign promises, and his challenge as the President of the United States to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. It was one major...

President Trump is doing away with the White House Cinco de Mayo celebration, a 16-year-old tradition, Spanish-language newspaper La Opinion reported Wednesday. Instead of a White House celebration this year, one headlined by Vice President Pence will be held at a to-be-determined location and with a reduced guest list, the report said. The White House did not respond to a request for comment and has not issued an official announcement of any planned events for the holiday. Both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama used Cinco de Mayo to connect with the Hispanic community — inviting Cabinet members,...

Hillary Clinton headed to East Los Angeles Thursday night in honor of the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo -- but her rally in this predominantly Hispanic part of L.A. was anything but celebratory. Hundreds of protesters descended upon East Los Angeles College to express their disdain for the Democratic presidential front-runner. Most of the protesters remained outside the college, although some made their way inside. The protesters -- some of whom carried pro-Bernie Sanders signs -- spanned the spectrum in terms of their key issues: Some were protesting Clinton's refusal so far to release her speaking engagement transcripts and her...
