The NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals plan on moving to a proposed new arena in suburban Virginia in 2028, ownership group chairman Ted Leonsis announced on Wednesday. The $2 billion deal would see an entertainment district constructed at Potomac Yard in Alexandria, about four miles south of the current home arena for the clubs, Capital One Arena in the heart of the nation’s capital.

(AFP) – A gunman fired around five shots inside Canberra’s main airport Sunday, sending passengers fleeing but injuring no one before he was detained by Australian police. Images posted on social media showed a police officer restraining a man on the ground inside the terminal as the emergency alarm sounded in the capital’s main airport.

A network of activists led by a handyman from Illinois is organizing simultaneous demonstrations in all 50 state capitals on May 1 to argue for ending governors’ stay-at-home orders and allowing people to go back to work. Josh Ellis of Naperville, Illinois, who owns a business repairing water and mold damage, said America’s foundation is being weakened by government overreach during the coronavirus pandemic. “We’re responsible for protecting our health,” Mr. Ellis told The Washington Times. “We believe in the severity of the disease, but at the same time, we don’t feel it’s government’s right to violate our constitutional rights.”...

Canadian goaltender Braden Holtby said he will not visit the White House with his Washington Capitals teammates, joining forwards Brett Connolly and Devante Smith-Pelly as players who have declined the invitation to honor the team’s Stanley Cup victory Monday. “I’ve got to stay true to my values, and I’m going to respectfully decline the offer,” Holtby said Friday morning. “In saying that, it’s a tough situation for everyone to be in, to be forced to make a decision of that standing. You’re a team and you want to stick together no matter what, so I hope everyone kind of blows...

Count out Devante Smith-Pelly if the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup and are invited to the White House to celebrate with President Donald Trump. "The things that he spews are straight-up racist and sexist," Canada's Postmedia quoted Smith-Pelly as saying Wednesday as the Capitals prepared for Game 5 against the Vegas Golden Knights. "Some of the things he's said are pretty gross. I'm not too into politics, so I don't know all his other views, but his rhetoric I definitely don't agree with. It hasn't come up here, but I think I already have my mind made up." Smith-Pelly,...

Across their 43 seasons, the Washington Capitals have dabbled in hapless hockey and exquisite hockey, boring hockey and effective hockey, but never had they played winning hockey through four playoff rounds, all the way to a grueling, glorious end. It took a team hardened by those postseason lures but liberated from high expectations to complete a run as dazzling as it was cathartic, capping it on Thursday night by dispatching the upstart Vegas Golden Knights, 4-3, to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. It was the Capitals’ fourth consecutive victory in the finals after a disorienting 6-4 loss...

At last: Game over. Series over. For the first time in 20 years, a D.C. team in one of the four major pro sports is moving on to the conference finals. Let that sink in. The Capitals were the last to do it, in 1998, when they eliminated the Senators in five games in the second round and then ousted the Sabres in six games to clinch their only Eastern Conference title in franchise history. With Evgeny Kuznetsov’s breakaway goal less than six minutes into overtime, Washington improved to 2-9 all-time in postseason series against the Penguins; the Capitals’ only...

BOSTON (CBS) — You’ve seen arenas pull stunts like “white outs,” where all the fans in attendance wear white shirts for big games, but the crowd for Game 3 between the Capitals and Bruins on Monday evening could debut the first ever “Obama out.” Russian Machine Never Breaks, a Capitals hockey blog, posted Sunday that the best way for Capitals fans to get into the head of Bruins goalie Tim Thomas will be to turn every fan in attendance into President Barack Obama. Thomas, of course, skipped the Bruins’ visit to the White House in January. The netminder later explained...

Provo (Utah), America’s conservative capital In 2005, The Bay Area Center for Voting Research, a nonpartisan think tank, found that Utah’s third largest city is America’s most conservative. Or in three words: Rightwing Republican Heaven. Votes aside, in more recent times, it became city-ranked 1st for volunteerism and is one of America’s healthiest urban centers. But just to scare left-liberals, the conservative Mormon metro is projected to have the greatest population increase. Thanks also to America's Freedom Festival at Provo where they "celebrate, teach, honor, and strengthen the traditional American values of family, freedom, God, and country" patriotism is thriving....

The next NHL Winter Classic will be more than Penguins hockey at the Steelers' stadium. "It'll be a winter celebration for the region," Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato said of a New Year's Day outdoor game between the Penguins and Washington Capitals at Heinz Field. "There are only a few events that are national events, especially on New Year's Day, and the fact that we can host this is big for us. It adds to other positive national attention we've been getting." NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is expected Friday to confirm that the 2011 Classic will be Jan. 1 at...

As I have become more aware of how conservative I am, I have had more of a desire to learn the history of our country. I am not ashamed to admit that I had NO idea where any state was located, especially since I used this website and now know all 50 states locations and their capitals. I am definitely going to make sure that I do this with my kids and I just wanted to pass this on so we can ALL educate our children and teach them the real history of our country. God Bless

Posting the same message on all the boards defeats the purpose of multiple-boards for special topics. It is very annoying to see the same message on every bulletin board. PLEASE! Melting ice 'will swamp capitals' By Geoffrey Lean Environment Editor 07 December 2003 Measures to fight global warming will have to be at least four times stronger than the Kyoto Protocol if they are to avoid the melting of the polar ice caps, inundating central London and many of the world's biggest cities, concludes a new official report. The report, by a German government body, says that even if it is fully implemented, the protocol will only have a "marginal attenuating effect" on the climate change. But last week even this was thrown into doubt amid contradictory signals from the...

Had gold not been discovered in California, its admission as a state would have been delayed for many years, perhaps decades. Thus, when California gave up its brief status as an independent nation and joined the United States, it was separated by thousands of miles of mostly unpopulated wilderness from what was then the center of American finance and culture.
