The next NHL Winter Classic will be more than Penguins hockey at the Steelers' stadium.
"It'll be a winter celebration for the region," Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato said of a New Year's Day outdoor game between the Penguins and Washington Capitals at Heinz Field.
"There are only a few events that are national events, especially on New Year's Day, and the fact that we can host this is big for us. It adds to other positive national attention we've been getting."
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is expected Friday to confirm that the 2011 Classic will be Jan. 1 at Heinz Field.
Officials from the NHL, Penguins and the NFL's Steelers declined comment.
The Penguins will face the Capitals in the outdoor game and NBC will land its coveted Sidney Crosby-Alex Ovechkin draw for what has become the league's highest rated television event aside from the Cup Final, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The Winter Classic is coming to Heinz Field!
I'm going to start looking for tickets immediately!
(let me know if you want on or off the list)
Some good news out of Pittsburgh!
Another Instant Classic!!!
I’ll be there too. It should be a great time. The hockey future looks bright with this, the Penguins and the Frozen Four coming relatively soon too.
No thanks, I’m good.
They need to hold one that doesn’t involve Cindy, Ovie or Detroit and this is coming from a Detroit fan.
The winter classic isn’t for regular hockey fans. It’s a TV event for casual sports fans. There really aren’t many good choices of teams to host this event. Crosby and Ovenchicken are great players and fun to watch. Pittsburgh will do the event well and hopefully people home nursing a hangover will tune in.
Good news. I will be there.
That’s great.
It’s going up against college football all day long. You aren’t going to get a lot of casual fans if it’s the same teams over and over and over again.
Essentially, after the Pittspuke/Buffalo game, the NHL has gotten lucky with the ratings. Eventually that gravy train is going to end.
