Had gold not been discovered in California, its admission as a state would have been delayed for many years, perhaps decades. Thus, when California gave up its brief status as an independent nation and joined the United States, it was separated by thousands of miles of mostly unpopulated wilderness from what was then the center of American finance and culture.

Then the vision of an independent California is taking on a new emphasis - the US should vote as a whole to expel California from the Union and voting representation in the US Congress, and allow it to be treated much as Puerto Rico - as a commonwealth.
California ain't READY to join the Union on any other basis.
