  • Why Using Seawater to Battle L.A. Fires Is a Last-Ditch Option

As raging wildfires incinerated the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles County, an enormous source of water lay tantalizingly within reach: the Pacific Ocean. But for a variety of reasons, seawater—which has been used to some extent against the Palisades fire—isn’t ideal for fighting fires. It damages the environment, is corrosive and difficult to access. Firefighters spray blazes with water because it wets and cools down materials that are burning or could catch fire. In that regard, saltwater and fresh water are basically the same, said Michael Gollner, a University of California, Berkeley, fire scientist. However, when seawater is dumped...

As I write this, Donald Trump is set to take office in less than a week. That’s one job I definitely wouldn’t want. Never, in the history of our nation, have we seen so much disaster, on so many levels and in every sector of society. I can’t think of any incoming president in history that ever faced what Trump is facing going into this. Let’s remember the people who are still suffering after Hurricane Helene devastated the Appalachian region in September. It’s not in the news anymore, and neither are the people who are suffering there every day, but...

The White House put out a statement from Biden on Tuesday evening. "I am being frequently briefed on the wildfires in west Los Angeles. My team and I are in touch with state and local officials, and I have offered any federal assistance that is needed to help suppress the terrible Pacific Palisades fire," the statement said. Biden added that the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant to "support areas that are impacted and help reimburse" California "for the immediate firefighting costs." "My administration will do everything it can to support the response," he said. "I...

Smoking weed is the newest worry for California firefighters as the state’s biggest wildfire races toward the nation’s biggest marijuana-producing region. The wildfire is headed for Post Mountain and Trinity Pines, two small communities northwest of Sacramento that lie in the heart of cannabis country. And many of the locals — up to 1,000 — are refusing to evacuate because they want to protect their pot. Law enforcement officials went knocking on doors, but can’t make anybody go, Trinity County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Nate Trujillo told the AP. “It’s mainly growers,” Trujillo said. “And a lot of them, they don’t...

TECATE, CALIF. -- With flames encircling this remote border crossing east of San Diego, U.S. customs inspectors wasted no time evacuating. They closed the gate blocking the lanes into California, wrapped a chain around it and snapped on the lock. But not for long. Minutes later Sunday afternoon, someone cut the chain. The gate swung open. People began rushing through the unguarded crossing ... Since the Harris fire started, agents have arrested more than 200 migrants in the area, many after being smoked out of ravines and trails. Some may have started to cross before the blaze. But some probably...

Shot this pic today while driving around the fringe of the burn area of the Old and Grand Prix fires near Devore California. This pic was taken at the intersection of Little League Drive and Myers Road on the border of Devore and San Bernardino. Fire got close to this intersection and did take some homes to the west of the sign down the road. According to a local gang types from San Bernardino were coming into the neighborhood breaking into homes vacated by the evac and that prompted the sign.
