When California lawmakers voted in 1999 to approve legislation giving state employees more generous retirement benefits and opening the door to a round of big increases in local government pensions, only a handful of legislators opposed the bill. One of them was then-Assemblyman Tom McClintock.

NewsMax.com WiresFriday, Aug. 29, 2003Also see: How the L.A. Times' Pro-Bustamante Poll Is Bogus.WASHINGTON – If you watched the 24-hour news channels Wednesday, one of the things you did not see was hour-by-hour coverage of the California electorate's tremendous swing toward millionaire movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger. According to a new KPIX/KCBS poll of 500 registered voters statewide, support for the recall of Democrat incumbent Gov. Gray Davis has also soared dramatically. The poll, conducted for the CBS affiliate in San Francisco by Survey USA, shows that 45 percent of the voters want Schwarzenegger to be the state's next governor....

The budget is bad for the state... recall them all... A few weeks ago, California's tax-and-spend Democrats with the help of 16 wobbly Republicans finally approved a budget that sells out the interests of California taxpayers. Why? In the case of the Republicans, probably so they would be liked by their friends across the aisle. Or, perhaps we can simply take them at their word; they were hungry, tired, and wanted to go home, eat a hot meal, take a warm shower and hop into a soft bed. The reality is that the budget Davis proposed back in May, was...

1. Can't afford more taxes. Really, I'm not making this up -- I'm middle class and they're taxing me to death. Arnold won't sign a no-new-tax pledge, so I have to assume that, with all those Pete Wilsonites on his staff, he's gonna pull a Pete Wilson and raise taxes -- maybe big time. 2. Don't want to see GOP abandon the pro-family issues. We've already got one party that stands for anything goes and yippee! to depravity, abortion and gay adoptions. Why do we need the GOP to say "me too" to Democrats. 3. I supported Reagan (in the...

Not really. Nor do we think Republicans Tom McClintock and Peter Ueberroth should get out of the race. At least not yet.

Well, maybe Mr. Ueberroth should. His blandness and lack of energy will not do.

The Democrats already have their Gray candidate. What's more, Mr. Ueberroth doesn't seem to be much more specific than Arnold Schwarzenegger, the frontrunner among Republicans currently in the race. But, then again, Mr. Ueberroth's nonpartisan pitch overrides his token Republicanism. For example, he's the only Republican in the race to oppose Proposition 187, the 1994 initiative barring state benefits to illegal aliens. Does this country-club Republican think he'll get Latino voters away from Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante? Indeed, in this crazy election, Mr. Ueberroth could end up with more Democrats and independent voters than Republicans.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The nation's oldest Hispanic civil rights group called on Arnold Schwarzenegger to step down from the advisory board of U.S. English, a group that seeks to make English the official language of the United States. AP Photo The League of United Latin American Citizens said the Austrian-born actor's position brings into question his commitment to Hispanics. "It just seems like all the issues that we support he doesn't," Gabriela Lemus, the league's director of policy and legislation, said Thursday. Please post local, regional, national news and views on Tom McClintock. The following guidelines for posting are per DoughtyOne's most excellent suggestion yesterday. McClintock Camp - Supporters or Defenders I would like to ask you all to please post positive articles about your man's policies and leave the Schwarzenegger bashing to the Democrats. Schwarzenegger Camp - Supporters or Defenders The call for McClintock to withdraw right now, or the tactic of calling him and his followers names for not doing so, is not productive and isn't good for the party. IN OTHER WORDS, SAVE THE RINO ARNIE/UNELECTABLE TOM RANTS FOR...

Sacramento -- Tom McClintock is in remarkable good humor. New polls have the Republican state senator running a distant third in his bid to replace Gov. Gray Davis in the Oct. 7 recall election, but politically, that's a glass that's half full, not half empty.

Arnold Schwarzenegger on the issues The Associated Press - 8/27/03 Arnold Schwarzenegger gave his most detailed comments to date on a range of social and policy issues Wednesday when he appeared on the Sean Hannity and Larry Elder syndicated talk-radio programs. Here are some of the positions he staked out: ABORTION _Told Hannity he is "pro-choice" but opposes the late-stage procedures described as "partial-birth" abortions. Asked whether he is in favor of parental notification when minors seek abortions, he replied, "I am. But in some cases when there is abuse in the family or problems in the family, then the...

Schwarzenegger trying to limit scope of debates CAMPAIGN SEES `A TWO-MAN RACE' WITH BUSTAMANTE By Dion Nissenbaum and Ann E. Marimow Mercury News Sacramento Bureau SACRAMENTO - As part of a strategy to drive the direction of the recall, Republican front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign is attempting to block challengers from taking part in televised debates that could boost their popularity. Instead of taking the stage with a group of contenders, Schwarzenegger's team wants to appear only with Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante. ``We think the polls are showing this is a two-man race,'' said one Schwarzenegger strategist who asked not...

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger made his clearest statements to date on abortion and other social issues on a talk show Wednesday, after weeks of criticism for not spelling out his views for voters in the California recall.

He said he favors legalizing marijuana for medical purposes and protecting a woman's right to abortion, but is against gay marriage and granting drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants.

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Saying the gubernatorial recall will not fix California's fiscal problems, a coalition of public-interest groups said Wednesday they've gathered more than enough signatures to place a budget reform measure before voters in March. The Budget Accountability Act would change the state's constitution so that a budget could be adopted by 55 percent of lawmakers, rather than the two-thirds majority required today.

State Sen. Tom McClintock (R.), a candidate for governor of California, spoke to HUMAN EVENTS' editorial board Monday on a variety of issues facing the state, including its deficit, its hostile business climate, immigration, and his opponents in the recall election. McClintock said he would begin to enforce Proposition 187 if elected, and to give the 1994 ballot measure-which cut off state services to illegal immigrants-a fair day in court. He also promised not to raise taxes, and criticized rival candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger (R.) for his refusal to make such a promise. McClintock identified several specific budget cuts he would...
