Monday, September 10, 2001 - 12:00 a.m. Pacific Rural life not great for health By Anjetta McQueenThe Associated Press WASHINGTON — Small-town Americans tend to smoke more, lose more teeth as they age and die sooner than suburban and many big-city residents, a government snapshot of the country's health shows. Overall, Americans are healthier today than they were 25 years ago, and an annual report being released today by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers some reasons: longer life expectancy, better infant survival, fewer smokers, less hypertension and lower cholesterol levels. WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 — A detailed study of child sexual exploitation in North America has concluded that the problem is far more widespread than has been previously documented. The study, to be released on Monday by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, relied on interviews with victims, child welfare workers and law enforcement officials in 28 cities in United States, Mexico and Canada from January 1999 through last March. It also relied on the latest public and private estimates on the number of runaway and homeless youths in the three countries and on estimates by law enforcement officials and child ...

Sport utility vehicles, prized by owners for their roominess and general heft on the highway, have come under ...

Rumsfeld backs Israel's retaliation By Janine Zacharia WASHINGTON (September 10) - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld voiced support yesterday for Israel's retaliatory attacks against Palestinians terror, saying: "I think that any time people are doing suicide bombings and blowing up your people at bus stops and in restaurants, you certainly cannot sit there and tolerate that." He told Fox News Sunday that "you have an obligation to your people to take action to try to reduce that level of violence or to eliminate it if humanly possible." On another morning talk show, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice left open ...

Remaining flexible: Overtime choices shouldn't be limited ALL OF US can use the extra money overtime pays. But wouldn't it be nice if we had the option to choose between "time-and-a-half" and an extra day off? As anyone with children can attest, all the money in the world can't buy more time spent on family. As the top-ranking Republican on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pension Committee, Sen. Judd Gregg is working on a bill that would give employees and employers the right to make such an agreement — a right many people don't have. We congratulate him ...

If you click on Salon, you might see a banner ad at the top which reads, "Let The Government Pay For Your Subscription". Aside from this line being a reflection of the liberal mindset that the tax rebate is actually the government's, rather than the taxpayer's money, I find it amusing that Salon, whose readership consists largely of people who rabidly opposed the Bush tax cut, is now encouraging people to use a portion of that tax cut to further Salon's self-interests.

Sunday, September 9, 2001 Salem man arrested after two day standoff with federal, state authorities SALEM, Mo. (AP) -- A man who was holed up in a home north of Salem was arrested without incident Saturday afternoon by officers who entered the house nearly 48 hours after a standoff began. The suspect offered no resistance when about 20 federal agents entered his home, said Mark James, special agent in charge of the Kansas City office of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Authorities would not say who lived in the home, but relatives and neighbors identified the resident as 43-year-old ...

Former Mississippi mail carrier gets 13 months in prison for not delivering JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- A former mail carrier was sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for failing to deliver all the mail on his route for about a year and a half. Prosecutors said Jesse Reynolds kept mail at his home because he wanted to speed up his delivery time and impress his supervisors. Reynolds told investigators he also dropped mail into collection boxes to be delivered by other postal workers. "I know what I did was wrong," he said before being sentenced Saturday. "All I ...

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) - Park rangers and SWAT team members evacuated a Yellowstone park campground Friday and surrounded a pickup truck they believe may contain armed fugitives wanted in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Marsha Karle, a spokeswoman for Yellowstone National Park, said information was sketchy, but a police spokesman in New Brighton, Minn., confirmed the pickup was stolen Wednesday from an elderly man and his wife who were robbed and beaten in their home. The suspects in that robbery and assault, two men ages 18 and 19, also are believed responsible for a crime spree in Wisconsin, where police ...

I could use a little help. A couple of years ago I remember reading an article in the WSJ in which they showed a 8th grade graduation test from the late 19th century. I've been looking for it for a while and no joy. Does anyone know where it or something similar can be found.I thank you in advance.

ADVANTAGE BUSH: Mickey Kaus makes a sensible if boring point that the current budget debate is being over-played. Neither Bush's predictions nor even the direst prognostications from outside see the future fiscal situation heading back to the kind of deficits of the 1980s and early 1990s. The most likely scenario is one in which the government is largely starved of much money for the next decade except to finance social security and Medicare (without much of a senior drug benefit). Mickey thinks this is good for Democrats because they can always rescind some of the tax cuts in future years ...

When Al Gore reminisced to the Teamsters about his mother singing him to sleep with "Look for the Union Label" -- a jingle that turned out not to have been written until he was 27 -- the hoots and catcalls came quickly. Well, just about one year later, George W. Bush now appears to be having similar troubles carrying his own union tune. And as much as we'd like to lay the blame at the feet of Big Labor or obstructionist Democrats, it really belongs to a White House shop that has yet to put its people where its mouth is.

I had the strangest dream last night. Must have beenall the chulent. I dreamed that in all of the coverage of the attacks on the Catholic school children walking to school in the Protestant neighborhood of Belfast this week, including on the BBC, CNN, LA Times, Washington Post, etc., the coverage always went as follows: "Today some Protestant activists threw pipe bombs at settler children in revenge for their occupation of Protestant lands. True we think such violence is unfortunate, but - after all - those Catholics had it coming. The Ulster Protestants are subject to such oppression that ...

An off-duty Jefferson County sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a shoplifting suspect who was attempting to flee in a car at a busy western Louisville grocery store yesterday afternoon, a spokesman for the sheriff's department said. Louisville police and the sheriff's department have launched separate investigations of the shooting at the Kroger store at 27th Street and Broadway. Spokesmen for both departments declined to provide much detail or to identify the deputy and the shooting victim, citing the investigations. Lt. Col. Carl Yates, a sheriff's department spokesman, said the shoplifting suspect was in police custody last night and was being ...

With the last thread being close to 200 posts, someone asked to start a new thread. Fine. And maybe I can clear some things up. 1. Bush lost the trust of House Oversight. Some people vehemently disagree with that. Sorry but, when an ally from the same party is compelled to issue a subpeano to force you into handing over papers, he has a serious problem with you. No. They don't trust Bush anymore. He has had 7 months to 'keep it to his vest', and they don't buy that line anymore. 2. I don't want to 'destroy' Bush. No. ...
