The ax required by regulators is intended for emergencies but puts a weapon in reach for attackersDUBAI—A central mystery of this week’s attempted downing of FlyDubai Flight 1073 has been how the co-pilot managed to smuggle a weapon into the plane to carry out his attack. It turns out he didn’t. The weapon he used is a cockpit fixture. United Arab Emirates authorities said Saturday the co-pilot attacked his captain with the plane’s crash ax—a tool that regulators around the world require airplanes to carry.Designed for use as an emergency tool to tear through metal in case of a fire...

An animal welfare group has been administering nasal naloxone to crows that are suspected to have eaten toxic drugs left accessible outside in downtown Prince George, B.C. The Good Caws Crow Rescue Society (GCCRS) has posted multiple videos showing their volunteers giving nasal naloxone to crows that are otherwise unresponsive. The videos then show the crows alert and able to fly again. Naloxone is a medication commonly used to reverse or reduce the impact of an opioid overdose in people, and Dayna Slater of GCCRS says the crows they are helping are centred in an area of town where illicit...

In the aftermath of two devastating hurricanes, then-Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s administration steered some $100 million in disaster funding toward affordable housing projects — despite hundreds of storm victims stuck in temporary homes, according to an analysis. Under Cooper’s watch, the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resiliency (NCORR) sent $100 million for affordable housing as the $1 billion agency was suffering from a gaping budget shortfall, an analysis by the John Locke Foundation, a free-market think tank in the state, found. One of the affordable housing projects, Starway Village, was a $9 million 278-unit complex that opened...

A federal judge blocked the Education Department on Thursday from releasing a list of foreign donors to Harvard, Columbia and other top US universities — ruling that the disclosure of the confidential information could “constitute irreparable harm.” DC US District Judge Tanya Chutkan slapped the temporary restraining order on the Trump administration as it was seeking to publish a list of all foreign donors who have given up to $5.2 billion to the universities since 2020. So-called non-natural person entities accounted for the vast majority of the $5.2 billion, officials noted, rather than individual donors. “This would be a foreign...

The Democrat Party is co-opting its socialist insurgents to defeat Trump and the GOP—but inviting ideological extremists into the fold could threaten the party’s future. This is the final installment of a two-part series. The first installment can be found here. Like Germany’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), America’s center-left Democrat Party faces a challenge from its extreme flank. Unlike the CDU, which has abandoned its past strategy and adopted one of confrontation, the Democrat Party is sticking with its strategy of co-option—not fusion—with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). But will the Democrat Party’s strategy prove any more successful...

Special Ops Magazine@specialopsmagIn Afghanistan, 2012, US Marine Lance Corporal Winder Perez took an RPG that punched through his thigh and stayed there, live, instead of detonating. An Army MEDEVAC crew that had been told they were picking up an injured child landed, saw the round still stuck in him, and voted to fly him anyway, even though hauling unexploded ordnance is against the rules. They made the careful run to FOB Edinburgh, where the rest of the base was held back and Navy Lt. Cmdr. James Gennari kept Perez breathing while Army EOD Staff Sgt. Ben Summerfield pulled the rocket free. Perez...

How the British people gave up their own country, their future, and the narrative of their past. The Thames and the Tower of London (Samuel Scott, 1771). With intellectual clarity and courage, Soviet-born British podcaster Konstantin Kisin has challenged the common claim that Britain has always experienced high-volume immigration and is inherently a “nation of immigrants.” He notes that the post-1066 Norman conquest added only 5,000–10,000 individuals from mainland Europe to the ruling class—a number that pales, both numerically and proportionally, next to modern net migration figures running in the hundreds of thousands annually. The unprecedented transformation of Britain’s demographic...

The midterm elections are a month away, and I would like to ask a favor: Please make sure that you vote. Please encourage your friends and family to vote. We need all the help that we can get. Perhaps you feel that voting is a useless exercise that exists to legitimize bad outcomes — a way of forcing citizens to accept responsibility for things they did not do. “You get the government you vote for,” we often hear, but that’s not exactly true. Unelected bureaucrats and judges from unaccountable agencies and Constitution-subverting courts give us a lot of government that...
