Online coverage of the celebrities whose houses have burnt down in the horrendous Los Angeles wildfires this week was met by a dismaying but predictable symbol: the laughing emoji. James Woods even broke down in tears on CNN describing the destruction of his property. But while some of the people posting comments on social media extended compassion, what sympathy could be found was muted – along the lines of ‘It’s sad, but what...

All are hoping to catch a glimpse of the bustling activity at the president-elect’s beach club estate home and club, which...

President-elect Donald Trump is not planning a military invasion of Greenland, nor should he. However, he does actually make sense when he suggests that the United States should try to acquire Greenland from Denmark peacefully. Trump and Congress should look closely into how much Greenland would be worth to this country and examine whether it would be worthwhile to offer to buy it from Denmark for an appropriate price.U.S. purchases of territory have a long and beneficial history. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 doubled the nation’s territory in one fell swoop. The 1819 Florida Purchase, the 1848 Mexican Cession, the...

Barbra Streisand appears to have been shamed into cutting her water usage after shocking aerial photographs showed her Malibu yard looking lush and green despite California experiencing its worst drought in history. Residents across California have been demolishing pools, cutting back on showers and letting their lawns turn brown after experts estimated that there will be less than a year's worth of drinking water left in the state's reservoirs by the end of 2015. Ten miles south of Tel Aviv, I stand on a catwalk over two concrete reservoirs the size of football fields and watch water pour into them from a massive pipe emerging from the sand. The pipe is so large I could walk through it standing upright, were it not full of Mediterranean seawater pumped from an intake a mile offshore. “Now, that’s a pump!” Edo Bar-Zeev shouts to me over the din of the motors, grinning with undisguised awe at the scene before us. The reservoirs beneath us contain several feet of sand through which the seawater filters before making...

When Jim Tyrer first appeared on a Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot in the early 1980s after completing an impressive 14-year career, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman looked like a sure bet to land in Canton. Tyrer, though, never made it into the Hall, and his name disappeared from the ballot for more than 40 years. That's because, in the early morning hours of Sept. 15, 1980, in an upstairs bedroom of a two-story ranch house, while his children were fast asleep, Tyrer took a .38-caliber pistol and shot his wife to death, and then turned the gun...
