In older adults, even mild impairment can affect the brain. But there are simple ways to reduce the harm.Adults over age 65 who experience vision loss have a nearly 50 per cent increased risk of developing dementia. If those vision problems are corrected, that risk drops dramatically. That’s according to a report published by an international commission focused on dementia prevention, which added vision impairment to its list of 14 total modifiable risk factors for dementia. Other risk factors include smoking, diabetes, social isolation and hypertension. Experts say the addition of vision loss is not a surprise, particularly given that...

Acknowledging that "since President Biden's attempt to use the 'bully pulpit' to try to shame corporate price gougers into accepting a fair mark-up approach hasn't worked," Democrat presidential nominee Vice-President Kamala Harris said "I will be taking a more aggressive approach. Within the first 100 days of a Harris/Walz administration we will issue a matrix delineating the fair prices for every major consumer product. I will instruct the Federal Trade Commission to monitor compliance and punish those businesses that violate our guidelines." She called this approach "the only sure way to put a lid on the inflation caused by the...

Mexico News Daily reports that a stela measuring more than 36 feet long has been discovered in the Cobá archaeological zone in the eastern Yucatán Peninsula. Glyphs carved into the stone describe the founding of the Maya settlement of Keh Witz Nal, or Deer Mountain, on May 12, A.D. 569, according to a preliminary analysis of the text conducted by researchers from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The text also names K'awiil Ch'ak Chéen, a previously unknown ruler of Cobá, and confirms that rulers often adopted the name of the god K'awiil, a protective deity associated with...

According to a Live Science report, excavators from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences working in western Russia at the Gnezdilovo burial ground have uncovered the remains of two people thought to have worked as medieval tax collectors. The first was a man who was between 35 and 40 years of age when he died. He was buried with a bronze belt buckle shaped like a lyre, a knife, a broken ceramic vessel, and a metal battle ax featuring a small hammer at one end and a semicircular notch at its base. This style of ax...

Nine months into the war, and the latest complaint is that Israel is making it harder to get a ceasefire in Gaza, because Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government is adding new demands in the ceasefire negotiations. The talks between Israel and Hamas have continued for months, facilitated – if that’s the right word, and it may not be – by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar. Hamas complains that Israel has been moving the goalposts in recent weeks, issuing new demands that make it harder to come to an agreement. Is that true? And if so, is it fair? In a...

Great work, Europe. No really, you’re doing fine. You’ve got British toadies threatening to extradite American citizens for speaking freely and some dork at the European Union threatening an American citizen for daring to have an online interview with one of America’s two major party presidential candidates. That’s going to go over well. Good thinking because Europe can sure afford to alienate the members of one of America’s two political parties. The Russians are coming? Hey, sounds like a personal problem, Monsieur Pierre Le Beau and Sir Adrian Wellington Smythe-Grimbsy. Turn off the Eurovision Song Contest and go fight your...

Donald Trump’s allies say his winning formula entering the final 80 days of the campaign is to break through a biased mainstream media and remind voters Vice President Kamala Harris served alongside President Biden and owns his biggest mishaps — namely on the economy. Suddenly locked in a dogfight or trailing in battleground states, Mr. Trump is facing renewed pressure to rethink his approach and tamp down the bombastic, stream-of-consciousness style that has made him the king of the GOP and the nation’s most polarizing political figure.Trump loyalists and GOP strategists maintain he does not need to do anything drastic....

We wrote Friday that Kamala Harris was likely to continue President Biden’s unfinished Build Back Better agenda, but it turns out we were far too optimistic. The policy priorities the Vice President laid out Friday are much worse, including a plan to impose national price controls on food and groceries.

The widow of Corey Comperatore, who was tragically killed during the rally in Buttler, has been invited to come on stage at Donald Trump’s second rally at the location. A gunman opened fire to assassinate Trump, but fatally shot Corey on July 13 at the same location. Helen Comperatore, Corey’s widow, recently spoke in an interview with Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 about her late husband and the impact of his loss."He saved his wife, he saved his child and he was just the best guy. He was just the best," Helen said."He was just a wonderful man, and I want...

It’s fun to muse on the torrent of panicked, deranged texting between Democratic Convention delegates as a runaway train of malignant fates, bad choices, insane policies, delusional ideas, and feral emotion drives them to nominate a moron for president. The confusion and self-doubt must be epic. Are we really gonna do this? Is this really happening? You must imagine this is the same state of mind as, say, a car-full of drunken bridesmaids fishtailing down the highway at 70mph toward a telephone pole. The mis-plays and subterfuges that brought them to this pass cannot be undone: the insult of letting...

Donald Trump has enlisted the help of former Democratic Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as he fine-tunes for his first debate against Vice President Kamala Harris. Gabbard, 43, took part in a recent strategy session with the former president, 78, at his Mar-Lago estate ahead of his September debate against the 59-year-old Democratic nominee, according to the New York Times. Gabbard, who at one point was on Trump’s lengthy running mate shortlist, has experience debating Harris dating back to their time as Democratic presidential primary candidates in 2019, and she unleashed a blistering attack on the then-California senator’s record as top...

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin took a public victory lap this week, claiming credit for managing the Old Dominion’s budget into a $1 billion surplus. In his annual Joint Money Committee Address before the Commonwealth’s relevant legislative committees, Youngkin, a Republican, laid out how, in recent years, most of the surrounding states’ growth had become attractive to longtime Virginians. Youngkin began by greeting the Democratic committee chairs: House Appropriations Chair Luke Torian of Prince William, House Finance Chair Vivian Watts of Fairfax and Senate President L. Louise Lucas, who serves as the upper chamber’s finance chairwoman. "Our neighbors in North Carolina,...

Ana Barbosu was awarded her Olympic bronze medal on Friday morning after the Romanian gymnast bumped USA's Jordan Chiles off the podium thanks to a bombshell court ruling. The 18-year-old initially finished third in the floor exercise final in Paris, only for Team USA to successfully appeal the score awarded to Chiles. The American's score was upgraded, putting her ahead of Barbosu who dropped her Romanian flag and broke down in tears. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport later ruled that the US appeal came outside the permitted one-minute window. The controversy has continued beyond the end of the...
