In older adults, even mild impairment can affect the brain. But there are simple ways to reduce the harm.
Adults over age 65 who experience vision loss have a nearly 50 per cent increased risk of developing dementia. If those vision problems are corrected, that risk drops dramatically.
That’s according to a report published by an international commission focused on dementia prevention, which added vision impairment to its list of 14 total modifiable risk factors for dementia. Other risk factors include smoking, diabetes, social isolation and hypertension. Experts say the addition of vision loss is not a surprise, particularly given that another sensory impairment – hearing loss – has been linked to dementia and is also on the list.
Here’s what we know about how even mild to moderate vision and hearing impairment increase the risk for dementia, and what to do about it.

Thanx for posting this, nick
Hearing loss can sometimes be a blessing... when you are married..😁
“How Hearing and Vision Loss Increase the Risk of Dementia”
Shut up!!🤯
How do they know the cause and effect? IOW< that the vision loss contributes to dementia?
Perhaps the vision loss is more a result of very early onset dementia, more like an early warning sign?
Besides, who after the age of 65 isn’t experiencing some deterioration in both? NOTHING works like it used to.
And at a certain age, so can vision loss. Wrinkles become a thing of the past.
We have an interesting situation.
My hearing has diminished.
My wife’s voice is affected by bronchial congestion
We have lost the ability to communicate from across the room
I’ve had about a dozen operations over the years on my right ear and avoided getting a hearing aid because they weren’t covered by insurance. The nerve is still good so my ENT recommended an Osia device specifically because of my age and hearing loss could be a factor in dementia. The Osia was covered by insurance. I helps as I have a bluetooth microphone that hangs off the TV so its not blasting my wife and it does improve hearing but it will never be the same.
does everyone over age 65 get the following:
cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. i don’t believe so.
