Every agency will see 5% budget reductions this month, the mayor’s budget officials said, as the city faces slower tax revenue growth. Throughout the history of the Church, several Popes have been deposed for a variety of reasons. Pope Liberius was deposed and exiled by the Arian emperor, Constantius II in the mid-4th century. Six hundred years later, Pope Gregory VII was deposed by anti-Pope Clement III, the creature of the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry IV. During the reign of Justinian, Pope Saint Silverius, who I have written about previously on this blog, was not only deposed—he was martyred by the political forces who coveted his ecclesiastical power as head of the Church. In my previous post, I included an excerpt from...

The Church of England will test-run stand-alone services for blessing same-sex couples after its ruling body, the General Synod, voted to move ahead with implementing special prayers of thanks and dedication for gay couples. The vote to go ahead with the pilot program followed hours of emotionally charged debate about the church’s pastoral responsibilities toward gay people. The synod’s vote on Wednesday (Nov. 15) follows the House of Bishops’ agreement last month to commend “Prayers of Love and Faith,” a collection of prayers and readings for same-sex couples, for use in existing church services. The bishops also approved the prayers...

IBM (IBM.N) on Thursday said it had immediately suspended all advertising on Elon Musk-owned X after a report found its ads were placed next to content promoting Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. The report comes a day after Musk endorsed an antisemitic post on X that falsely claimed members of the Jewish community were stoking hatred against white people. Media watchdog Media Matters said it found that corporate advertisements by IBM, Apple (AAPL.O), Oracle (ORCL.N) and Comcast's (CMCSA.O) Xfinity were being placed alongside antisemitic content. "IBM has zero tolerance for hate speech and discrimination and we have immediately suspended...

Make America Great Again Inc., the super PAC backing former President Donald Trump, has spent a magnitude more on ads targeting 2024 rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis than on President Biden — despite Trump leading the GOP field by over 40 points on average. MAGA Inc. has spent over $23 million funding ads opposing DeSantis and over $6.7 million against Biden, according to data published by Rob Pyers, research director for the California Target Book. The large discrepancy in spending shows Trump’s camp is engaged in the primary election and is not merely focusing on beating Biden, as the former...

Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) announced on Thursday he will not seek re-election in 2024, ending his term in Congress on Jan. 3, 2025, and giving Republicans a possible pickup opportunity in the battle to hold onto control of the House next year. Kildee, 65, pointed to his cancer diagnosis and his ensuing reevaluation of his life as part of his decision to leave office. But in the battleground state of Michigan, the GOP is itching to flip the state's 8th Congressional District. “I was first elected to public office when I was 18 years old. Nearly five decades later, I...

Billionaire Warren Buffet believes he is special. He doesn't think he should be forced to inform the SEC when he is amassing shares in a stock because if people knew they might push up the price of additional shares. Everyone should pull out their violin. Sadly, the SEC, which is supposedly for transparency and equal administration of regulations, has allowed this nonsense, and in a sense, given him a huge kickback for almost thirty years by allowing him to amass bigger positions in secret. Here's a news item I found dating from 1997: Berkshire Trading Kept Secret Sec Grants Buffet...

SACRAMENTO, CA — In a clever ruse to trick Governor Gavin Newsom into keeping cities and streets clean all the time, Californians set up a dummy of Chinese President Xi outside Gavin Newsom's office. Sources confirmed the trick has already proven successful. "Oh! President Xi, sir! I thought you left yesterday!" said a flustered Governor Newsom as he stepped out of his office building for lunch to see Xi staring at him silently from a sidewalk covered in tents and human feces. "Let me just clean this up for you really quick. I'm sorry. I didn't know you were still...
