Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee announces he won't seek reelection, in possible pickup for GOP

Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) announced on Thursday he will not seek re-election in 2024, ending his term in Congress on Jan. 3, 2025, and giving Republicans a possible pickup opportunity in the battle to hold onto control of the House next year.

Kildee, 65, pointed to his cancer diagnosis and his ensuing reevaluation of his life as part of his decision to leave office. But in the battleground state of Michigan, the GOP is itching to flip the state's 8th Congressional District.

“I was first elected to public office when I was 18 years old. Nearly five decades later, I continue to love public service and the work I do every day. For most of this year, I saw myself continuing to serve and was actively planning another campaign," Kildee said in a statement. "But there are times in all our lives that make you reassess your own future and path. For me, being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year was one of those moments. Thankfully, earlier this year I had successful surgery and I’m cancer-free."

The Michigan congressman was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma but with surgery that removed a tumor in his tonsil, he declared he was cancer-free in May. Although he won't seek another term Kildee claims he won't retire from public life.

“While I’m stepping back from elected office at the end of my term, I’m most definitely not retiring. I’m looking forward to a new chapter continuing to serve Flint and mid-Michigan, just outside of elected office," he added.

Wow, he was elected at age 18 to an elective office???

Has he ever had a job outside of politics?

He is definitely a career politician.

That’s pathetic.

That’s not a career.

That’s a parasitic existence.

This guy is a total sleez. I ran into him once and l wished l was wearing rubber gloves when he shook my hand. He was passing out little state maps that he put campaign stickers on. No doubt the maps were paid for using taxpayer money

If Michigan GOP wasn't moronic, it could be a pickup...

At least RED EAGLE POLITICS said they are disorganized.

Any Michigan FReepers on who can tell us about the district?

Here's the best data regarding Dan Kildee and his district:

Who is Dan Kildee? Bio, election results and Congressional voting record

Michigan Congressional District 8

Kildee has indeed been in office (even though it was just school board at first) since he was a teenager. His lifetime conservative rating is 3% through 2022.

His district was moved slightly to the right in the most recent redistricting, making it even more of a tossup though still slightly left-leaning. Trump lost the old district by 4.3% in 2020; under the new (current) lines he would have lost by 2.1%.

Genessee County (Flint) casts about half of the votes in this district and is heavily Democrat. With the seat being open, the GOP candidate *should* sweep the rest of the district with perhaps 55% or so, and hopefully be able to get at least 45% in Genessee. That would make it very close. Any better performance than that means a win.

The Rats will be lining up to keep this district (or the puppetmasters will clear the field for some anointed candidate) while the Republicans currently have nobody worth mentioning though Kildee DID just retire yesterday and the filing deadline isn't until next April. However they better get someone good, someone soon, and get him some cash or they're going to piss this chance away.
