Russian rocket and artillery strikes hit areas across the Dnieper River from Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Ukrainian officials said Sunday, as fears persisted that fighting in the vicinity could damage the plant and cause a radiation leak. Russian forces took control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant soon after the war began and hold adjacent territory along the left bank of the wide river. Ukraine controls the right bank, including the cities of Nikopol and Marhanets, each of them about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the plant. Heavy firing during the night left parts of Nikopol without electricity, said...

Joey DeFrancesco was 16 years old when he signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records. The following year he released his first record, titled All of Me. His performance on All of Me has been attributed as helping bring back the organ to jazz music during the 1980s. That same year, DeFrancesco joined Miles Davis and his band on a five-week concert tour in Europe. He followed up with playing keyboard on Davis’ album Amandla, which reached No. 1 on the Contemporary Jazz Albums chart in 1989

CALIFORNIA CITY -- California's precariously out-of-date hybrid power grid can't handle the state's growing amounts of solar and wind energy coming online, with system managers already forcing repeated cutbacks in renewables and a continued reliance on conventional energy to keep the grid stable, according to state data. Department of Energy No place to go: Image from the Energy Department report “Queued Up … But in Need of Transmission." Department of Energy The shortcomings of the transmission grid, which energy consultants in this bellwether state have warned about for years, raise the prospect that marquee products of the growing battery economy...

The media may think their clever reporting is hiding Biden’s decline from the world, but the world is well aware of it. Particularly in Australia. Sky News Australia host Andrew Bolt spoke with psychiatrist Tanveer Ahmed on his show and discussed Ahmed’s take on the cognitive condition of the leader of the free world. They weren’t the only ones who noticed this strange behavior from Biden and things are just getting worse. The New York Times published an article earlier this year on how “uncomfortable” Biden’s age is “for him, his team, and his party

Russian forces are putting the "entire continent at risk" by using Europe's biggest nuclear power plant as a military base, Ukraine's foreign minister has said. The Zaporizhzhia plant has come under severe shelling recently, with Ukraine and Russia blaming each other for the attacks. Fears have been raised that the fighting could cause a radiation leak. "For decades, nuclear safety has remained Ukraine's top priority, especially given our tragic past," Dmytro Kuleba said, referring to the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. "Russian invaders turned the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant [NPP] into a military base putting the entire continent at risk. "Russian...

Russia's plan to expand its armed forces is unlikely to have an impact on the Ukraine war, the UK's Ministry of Defence has said. Vladimir Putin recently signed a decree to increase the Russian armed forces' military personnel to more than 1.15m - a potential increase of 137,000. But the MoD said the boost was unlikely to increase Russia's combat power - partly because of ongoing losses. President Putin's decree came amid a military recruitment drive. There have been reports that recruiters have even been visiting prisons, promising inmates freedom and money. Currently, Russia has a limit of just over...

This is what it has come to my friends. People are thriving while homeless encampments get bigger and more visible every day. Is 40 hours a week of work too much to demand when there's plenty out there at $12-15 an hour? I wouldn't want any of those jobs but if it were necessary I wouldn't complain. Just look at all those from Mexico who are willing to accept it.

The White House is rushing ahead to roll out a new COVID-19 booster shot campaign in early September, but is facing an uphill battle to ensure it is successful. The vaccines being used in the campaign are the first ones that have been manufactured to specifically target the subvariants of omicron that are currently causing the most infections, and administration officials have indicated they’re preparing to start offering the shots shortly after Labor Day.

The graphene has been found in some of the COVID-19 vaccine lots. We also know that there are studies about self-assembling graphene molecules, and self-assembling viruses. We also know that with nanotechnology a drug can be delivered directly to a specific tissue, like cancer, the brain, the heart, etc. What could go wrong?

The Thirty Years War was one of the most destructive conflicts in European history. Very few people died on the battlefield, but millions died by starvation and disease, most of them when a new wave of bubonic plague was carried across borders by soldiers; some parts of Germany lost up to half of their population. But there aren't a lot of movies about the conflict: the only one I can think of is The Last Valley, a 1971 film directed by novelist James Clavell, starring Michael Caine as the ruthless leader of a group of mercenaries looking for shelter from the...

“The blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to them, ‘Do you believe that I am able to do this?’ They said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord.’ Then He touched their eyes, saying, ‘It shall be done to you according to your faith.’ And their eyes were opened” (Matthew 9:28–30a). Sometimes at conversion, the Lord wants sinners to give a more public profession of their trust in Him, in keeping with Paul’s teaching, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Rom....

More than four dozen state lawmakers have penned a letter to Mastercard and American Express, urging the New York-based credit card companies to support a measure that could make it easier to spot suspicious purchases at gun stores. Credit card companies track spending based on the type of retailer where a card is used — though they do not track the individual items that are purchased. Each purchase is tagged with what’s called a merchant category code, with the master list set by an international standards body. Some categories are fairly broad, such as those for grocery stores and airlines,...

Russian troops utilizing a commercial drone for reconnaissance while filming a quick propaganda film find themselves embarrassed after Ukrainian forces hijack their drone. We've known about the electronic warfare happening in Ukraine since pretty much day one of the conflict. It's been no secret that both sides are engaging in this style of warfare, both from a propaganda perspective and from a cyberwarfare perspective. That said, this may be the first time we're seeing footage of that cyberwarfare happening in real-time, and in a manner that directly impacts troop movements on the battlespace. It's likely that after this drone was...

The Supreme Court decision in Bruen sets an appropriate standard for evaluating laws that violate a fundamental, enumerated right protected by the Constitution in the Second Amendment. When there is a challenge to a federal or state rule, law, or regulation claiming such rule, law, or regulation violates the Second Amendment, the court is to evaluate the law based on the historical tradition of firearms regulation. It is up to the State to prove the longstanding history and cultural acceptance of such laws, rules, and regulations. If the State cannot prove such history and acceptance, the laws, rules, or regulations...

The Pentagon’s rosters are tens of thousands of troops short, as the department battles the worst recruiting crisis since the draft ended in 1973. Criminal records, drug use, and poor health bar three out of four Americans from serving without a waiver, while a booming civilian jobs market entices many of the rest. In response, the Pentagon ought to tap the largest pool of available talent: foreigners. No self-respecting country should rely entirely on foreign troops. But enlisting some quickly fills the ranks with quality personnel. The British Army has long turned to Gurkhas, Fijians, and others from the Commonwealth, in...

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Tuesday, Aug. 26. From passengers arriving here to-day it is ascertained that on Saturday the enemy commenced operations early and went to work with a will using their artillery at Rappahannock Station. It soon became evident that the Station would have to be abandoned, and at about 9 o'clock the bridge across the Rappahannock was burned and the abutments blown up. Orders were also received to remove our stores and ammunition and burn the houses at Rappahannock Station, which was accomplished. We sustained no casualties. Everything was quiet at Warrenton and Warrenton Junction both on Sunday and yesterday....

LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Times reports that billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso is now losing the race for mayor to Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) because of the Supreme Court’s June decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The Times reports that while political momentum favored Caruso’s challenge in the spring, he lost in the June primary because of Bass’s support from the party machine, and political changes — including abortion — have boosted her prospects since then:
