Patients diagnosed with a type of brain tumor survived for longer when they were treated aggressively with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. But far from suggesting that more treatment always leads to better survival, the study by UC San Francisco underscores the critical role of genomic profiling in diagnosing and grading brain tumors. In the study, UCSF researchers followed 38 patients with a tumor type that was reclassified by the World Health Organization in November 2021, from a grade 2 or 3 glioma, to a "glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype, CNS WHO grade 4," based on its molecular features. The previous diagnosis was determined...

Measure would open up domestic shelters and girls locker rooms to disturbed bio malesFrom Sophia Lorey/CFCSan Diego -- Instead of protecting the rights of women and girls, the San Diego Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will vote on a radical ordinance that will take opportunities away from women and girls, while also putting them at risk. Although Hong Kong prides itself on being Asia’s World City, a lot of common terms and phrases reflect an anti-foreign sentimentI am not easily offended. Offence-taking in the modern age, it seems, is often used to leverage power and impose one’s moral sensibilities on others. I don’t care. That said, one aspect of Hong Kong culture that has always unsettled me is the way other races are referred to in Cantonese. The roots of these terms come from anti-foreign attitudes. The commonly used phrase for “white person” is (gweilo), which literally means “ghost man”, or “devil man”. The term for...

As Russia launched its invasion, the U.S. gave Ukrainian forces detailed intelligence about exactly when and where Russian missiles and bombs were intended to strike, prompting Ukraine to move air defenses and aircraft out of harm’s way, current and former U.S. officials told NBC News. That near real-time intelligence-sharing also paved the way for Ukraine to shoot down a Russian transport plane carrying hundreds of troops in the early days of the war, the officials say, helping repel a Russian assault on a key airport near Kyiv. It was part of what American officials call a massive and unprecedented intelligence-sharing...

A new film is highlighting the story of a controversial Japanese soldier who refused to surrender after the Second World War ended and spent 29 years hiding in the jungle. Hiroo Onoda, who died in 2014 at the age of 91, was stationed on the island in the Philippines in 1944 but remained until 1974 because he did not believe the war was over. He survived by eating dried banana skins, coconuts and stolen rice, believing he was in a guerilla war for 30 years. Onoda became the last Japanese soldier to surrender – but only after his former commander,...

The Webb Space Telescope is in its final (seventh) stage of alignment, bringing the superlative spacecraft tantalizingly close to commencing its scientific operations. Webb, in an artist’s rendering.Illustration: NASA GSFC/CIL/Adriana Manrique Gutierrez This alignment stage involves final tweaks to the telescope’s primary mirrors and is happening right on schedule, four months after the spacecraft’s launch from French Guiana. Unlike the earlier alignment stages, each of which had a specifically outlined goal—stacking images of a specific star, for example—the seventh (and final) stage merely repeats certain checks made previously, to ensure everything is as precise as possible. Meanwhile, the crucial Mid-Infrared...

Over the past 15 years, public health authorities have downgraded recommendations for the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test as a screening tool to reduce the overdiagnosis and overtreatment of men with low-grade prostate cancer. Now, researchers have found that while these efforts have been effective, the incidence of higher-grade disease and metastasis at diagnosis have risen. "To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate nationally that low-grade prostate cancer is no longer the most commonly diagnosed type of prostate cancer," said Dr. Jim Hu. In 2012, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against screening all men with...

Exclusive: French President Emmanuel Macronâthe one who wanted to make unvaccinated Frenchmen second class citizensâjust won reelection against more conservative Marine Le Pen, largely due to a big turnout among senior voters (Macron didnât do so well in the under 35 graphic). One congratulation on his reelection raises some big red flagsâliterally. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) state media outlet Global Times, which has openly called for war and violence against Chinaâs enemies, was seemingly full of glee at Macronâs reelection. "China and France share many similar views in terms of safeguarding multilateralism and improving global governance," Global Times wrote. "We...

In China, companies, banks, and individuals cannot freely move money into or out of the country unless they comply with strict foreign exchange (forex) rules. The Chinese communist party (CCP) has been imposing “zero tolerance” controls to limit foreign exchange trading done in a private or surreptitious manner. But despite the CCP’s best efforts, the massive outflow of Chinese capital to other countries is continuing and the speed has recently accelerated. One example of the CCP’s crackdown efforts involves the Tianjin-based Quanjian Group. Quanjian was fined $14.6 million for its foreign trading by the Anhui Branch of China’s State Administration...

Steven Mosher was the first American social scientist to visit mainland China, in 1979. He was invited there by the Chinese government, where he had access to government documents and actually witnessed women being forced to have abortions under the new “one-child policy.” Mr. Mosher was a pro-choice atheist at the time, but witnessing these traumatic abortions led him to reconsider his convictions...

In an evidence-based clinical practice guideline published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, recommendations are presented for the prevention of surgical site infection (SSI) after major extremity trauma. Researchers evaluated the current best evidence associated with treatment to develop recommendations for prevention of SSI among adults after major extremity trauma. Fourteen strong and moderate-strength recommendations were developed. In the setting of open fracture in major extremity trauma, the authors suggest early delivery of antibiotics to reduce the risk for deep infection. In operative treatment of open fractures, preoperative antibiotics are suggested to prevent SSI. Patients with open fracture are...
