Likening "unfair and deceptive" firearms advertising to that of tobacco products, gun safety advocates Thursday asked US regulators to crack down on the industry. A coalition of three groups asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which regulates advertising, to "investigate and regulate the gun industry's unfair and deceptive advertising," according to their 40-page petition. Researchers at Colorado State University are predicting a very active 2022 Atlantic season, with 19 named storms. The average for named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 through November) is 14.4. The initial forecast from the CSU Tropical Meteorology Project calls for nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes, classified as at least Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 111mph. Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky has vetoed a bill banning transgender athletes from competing in sex-segregated sporting events. Beshear, a Democrat, refused to sign the bill Wednesday after claiming it was most likely unconstitutional. Beshear claimed the legislation "discriminates against transgender people" and therefore would not hold up in court. The Republican-dominated state legislature can force the bill through with a majority vote in both houses, which is expected to happen next week.

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) on Thursday announced she has tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the latest high-profile figure in the nation’s capital to contract the virus. Bowser said she tested positive with an at-home rapid test on Wednesday after experiencing allergy symptoms over the past week. A PCR test later confirmed her diagnosis.
