Likening "unfair and deceptive" firearms advertising to that of tobacco products, gun safety advocates Thursday asked US regulators to crack down on the industry. A coalition of three groups asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which regulates advertising, to "investigate and regulate the gun industry's unfair and deceptive advertising," according to their 40-page petition. "The FTC is failing consumers, failing our democracy, and failing the millions of Americans who have lost their lives or their loved ones to gun violence," the petition said. "No industry -- regardless of its political clout -— should be immune from scrutiny of its marketing...

Researchers at Colorado State University are predicting a very active 2022 Atlantic season, with 19 named storms. The average for named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 through November) is 14.4. The initial forecast from the CSU Tropical Meteorology Project calls for nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes, classified as at least Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 111mph. Seasonal forecasts from CSU were started 39 years ago by meteorology professor William Gray, who died in 2016. Of note, the CSU team puts a high probability of a major hurricane making landfall in the U.S. They said...

Stolen bikes worth more than $80,000 recovered, Boulder police say By: Óscar Contreras BOULDER, Colo. – Three bikes worth more than $80,000 that were stolen from a Boulder business last week have been recovered and a suspect is now in custody, police said Wednesday. The suspect was arrested after police were called to a local bike shop the day after the burglary when the business owner noticed the man walking into the shop with one of the bikes valued at $12,000 and a pair of bolt cutters sticking out of his backpack. Further investigation into the individual led police to...
  • Mass Shooting in Sacramento Shows California's Gun Control Laws Have Failed

    04/07/2022 9:36:34 AM PDT · by rellimpank · 41 replies
Inevitably, last weekend’s horrendous fusillade of bullets on a downtown Sacramento street that left six people dead and at least a dozen wounded generated demands for new gun controls in state that already has the nation’s most restrictive firearms laws. However, if anything, what happened just two blocks from the state Capitol underscores the folly of believing that gun violence can be meaningfully reduced by trying to choke off the supply of firearms — any more than the prohibition of liquor or the war on drugs succeeded. The state’s gun laws have hassled law-abiding hunters and gun hobbyists and some...
  • China Threatens ‘Forceful Measures’ If Pelosi Visits Taiwan Amid Reports Speaker To Arrive Sunday

There are widespread reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday, which some are still chalking up to “rumor” given that neither Taipei officials nor Pelosi’s office have confirmed the trip, which would be the first time since 1997 that a US House speaker visited the island (when Republican Newt Gingrich did). Beijing was quick to slam the trip, urging the US to cancel it immediately, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian saying China opposes all forms of such official interaction between the US and Taiwan. He lodged official protest, saying it would...

At the very last minute, Georgia’s corrupt Governor and Lieutenant Governor stepped in and blocked an election integrity bill that would make major positive changes to the state’s election process. Garland Favorito at Voter GA reported moments ago: A key integrity provision to unseal Georgia election ballots was blocked at the last minute on Sine Die by Gov. Brian Kemp and Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan. Duncan prevented the Senate from confirming House changes to SB89 which included language to unseal Georgia election ballots and improve ballot chain of custody procedures. SB89 language would have allowed counterfeit ballots to be detected...

Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky has vetoed a bill banning transgender athletes from competing in sex-segregated sporting events. Beshear, a Democrat, refused to sign the bill Wednesday after claiming it was most likely unconstitutional. Beshear claimed the legislation "discriminates against transgender people" and therefore would not hold up in court. The Republican-dominated state legislature can force the bill through with a majority vote in both houses, which is expected to happen next week.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey has admitted he regrets his involvement in creating a centralised internet."The days of usenet, irc, the web...even email (w PGP)...were amazing," he said in a tweet on Sunday."Centralizing discovery and identity into corporations really damaged the internet. I realize I'm partially to blame, and regret it."As Affirm CEO and co-founder Max Levchin points out in replying to Dorsey's tweet, the internet "changed from arthouse to blockbuster because it needed to gain an audience and make money".Dorsey continued saying that "perhaps greater emphasis on protocol first and then interface would have helped"."I agree there was less technology...

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich issued a report on Wednesday that claimed the office had not found evidence of widespread voter fraud or irregularities in the 2020 presidential election in Maricopa County. However, the Attorney General did raise serious concerns about voting procedures in his interim report to Senate President Karen Fann. Brnovich claimed his office ‘has left no stone unturned in the aftermath of the 2020 election.” His report can be read in full below. https://www.scribd.com/document/568477855/Arizona-AG-Report-on-Reports-of-Fraud-in-2020-Election#from_embed “Six months ago the Arizona Attorney General’s Office (the “Office”) received reports sent from the Arizona State Senate concerning its Maricopa County Forensic...

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) on Thursday announced she has tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the latest high-profile figure in the nation’s capital to contract the virus. Bowser said she tested positive with an at-home rapid test on Wednesday after experiencing allergy symptoms over the past week. A PCR test later confirmed her diagnosis. Under the guise of "economic development" and the promise of "jobs, jobs, jobs", large corporations are cheating American taxpayers when they relocate/expand their businesses across state lines (or exert pressure on their existing state/city by threatening to exit and take their jobs elsewhere). The most visible example of this scam was Amazon's highly publicized search for a second headquarters in 2017-2018. Read the excellent Wired Magazine story, Why Amazon's Search for a Second Headquarters Backfired, which highlights Amazon's abuse as it played states against each other to extract the maximum incentives for itself. The truth is, in most cases,...

On Tuesday President Trump requested that the Clinton-appointed judge overseeing his Russiagate case against Hillary Clinton and others be removed from the case due to obvious conflicts of interest. President Trump recently sued a number of individuals and former officials for their actions related to the Russiagate hoax and attempted coup of his administration. Somehow this case was assigned to Clinton appointed Judge Middlebrooks and Judge Ryon McCabe. President Trump urged the courts to replace the Clinton judge with someone who is not biased in the case. On Wednesday Judge Ryon McCabe recused himself from the case. But Judge Middlebrooks...

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is suddenly the favorite to mount a comeback after current Prime Minister Naftali Bennett lost the majority he needs to hold his coalition together with a key defection on Wednesday. Israel’s government looked set to crumble Wednesday after coalition whip Idit Silman announced she is quitting to form a new government, causing the ruling coalition headed by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to lose its majority. … Silman, who is a member of Knesset in Bennett’s Yamina party, chose to defect after she clashed with Israel’s Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz over his order to hospitals...

US/AMERICAS: Fed President Mary Daly stated that the 40-year high inflation was equally as harmful to individuals as not having a job. Daly proclaimed that the Fed believes inflation will continue to rise for some time, but tried to provide the people with some confidence. Increasing interest rates “is necessary to ensure that again, [you] go to bed at night, you’re not worrying about whether prices will be higher, considerably higher tomorrow,” the Fed president stated. The US implemented additional sanctions today on Russia. Two of Putin’s adult daughters have been sanctioned as the US is accusing them of harboring...
