SYDNEY (Reuters) - Asian shares stalled and oil prices slid on Monday as coronavirus lockdown in Shanghai looked set to hit global activity, while throwing another wrench into supply chains that could add to inflationary pressures. China's financial hub of 26 million people told all firms to suspend manufacturing or have people work remotely in a two-stage lockdown over nine days. The spread of restrictions in the world's biggest oil importer saw Brent skid $3.68 to $116.97, while U.S. crude fell $3.30 to $110.60. [O/R] Risk sentiment was helped by hopes of progress in Russian-Ukranian peace talks to be held...

In the final chapter of his 1967 book "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community," Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. proposed a bold approach to eliminating poverty. "The solution to poverty," he wrote, "is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure: the guaranteed income." Five decades later, the approach is being tested across the U.S. The idea is simple but controversial. People receive a set amount of money periodically with no strings attached. Advocates believe that this gives recipients, often in the most marginalized groups, freedom to spend it in ways that are most beneficial...
  • Strange new type of solar wave defies physics

Scientists have detected a strange new type of high-frequency wave on the sun's surface, and the waves are moving three times faster than scientists thought was possible. The acoustic waves, called high-frequency retrograde (HFR) vorticity waves, were spotted rippling backward through the sun's plasma in the opposite direction of its rotation. The previously unknown type of wave was described in a study published March 24 in the journal Nature Astronomy. Scientists can't see into the sun's fiery depths, so they often measure the acoustic waves that move across its surface and bounce back toward its core to infer what's going...

Southern California might be a great place to live, but the pandemic and an expensive housing market have pushed many residents to move—like, all the way to Mexico. Year-over-year home prices in the Los Angeles metro area were up 15.2% in 2021, while prices in Southern California overall went up 15.4%, according to a report by Norada Real Estate Investments. Shockingly, almost half of America’s “million-dollar cities,” where the average price of a home is at least $1 million, are in California, according to a Zillow study published today. The Los Angeles metro area has 57 million-dollar cities, and the...
  • It IS sometimes bloody hard to tell the good cops from the bad cops once a police force becomes a political tool of the left: such is life in Australia. (A Personal Post.)

I am a regular protestor on Saturdays in Melbourne. Every week one to two thousand people deeply committed to freedom take to the streets to demand that justice replace the insane lockdown and mandate culture that has engulfed Australia and is at its worst in Victoria under a Socialist Left state government. Large numbers of police are present and they sometimes have to deal with infiltrators who try to start trouble. I have personally witnessed physical attacks by police on innocent people on Melbourne's streets. I have been the victim of bullying and perjury by the police in my home,...

Our rulers think they have anesthetized those portions of the population they have not simply bought off. They might find that there is quite a lot of jump left in the frog yet.It is difficult to plumb the depths of cynicism that fires the Biden Administration’s motions with respect to Ukraine. On the one hand, we are being invited to join in a grandiose morality play in which the great white-hatted forces of the West talk endlessly about peace and democracy while waging or at least fomenting war. On the other hand, the war drums drown out the cries of...

Bob Gates, former defense secretary: Biden “has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy & national security issue over the past four decades.” As president Joe Biden has done his best to confirm statements of his former boss Barack Obama and the Defense Secretary for Bush #43 and Obama-Bob Gates. Proving them correct. On Saturday, 3/26/22, Biden said: Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia, for free people refuse to live in a world of hopelessness and darkness. We will have a different future, a brighter future, rooted in democracy and principles, hope and light, of decency and...

After weeks of panic-buying for fear that the Communist authorities would order another lockdown, President Xi has apparently tossed his “targeted” approach aside and ordered a lockdown in Shanghai, the country’s largest city and its financial hub.,/A>The city of 26 million will be locked down “in two stages” over the span of nine days as authorities try to quash surging COVID numbers. The lockdowns were ordered after the city reported a new record number of infections on Saturday. During that 24 hours period, the city recorded 2,631 new asymptomatic cases, which accounted for nearly 60% of China’s total new asymptomatic...

People who like their Oscars apolitical didn’t remotely get what they wanted as the ceremony quickly went political — but didn’t mention Vladimir Putin. Regina Hall, one of the three co-hosts alongside Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer, set things up by talking about how “toxic masculinity” turned into “cruelty to women and children.” “Damn that Mitch McConnell,” quipped Sykes. They also closed out their opening jokes with a gibe at Florida’s Don’t Say Gay law. Sykes said it would be a great night, adding — “for you people in Florida, we’re gonna have a gay night.” They opened memorably as...

Former President Donald Trump would not be "capable" of holding peace talks in Moscow between Ukraine and Russia to stop the ongoing war, said John Bolton on Saturday. Bolton, who served as Trump's national security adviser from 2018 to 2019, said that such statesmanship would be out of Trump's character. "He's not capable of it," Bolton told The Palm Beach Post. "This would require thinking through a policy and considering the pluses and minuses, the risks and costs involved. That's just not what he does." Last Saturday, Trump said his personality kept the US out of war and added that...

Richard Engel, NBC News' chief foreign correspondent, told Chuck Todd on Sunday's "Meet The Press" that he doesn't believe Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was "overly impressed" with President Biden's comments in Poland about Russian President Vladimir Putin. Engel told Todd that the "Russian military strategy is all over the place." He said the strike on Lviv, a Ukrainian city 50 miles from the Polish border, was also likely meant to be a message to Biden. "A bit of an insult to say ‘we’re going to strike right near the Polish border while you're in Poland," Engel said.

CHONGQING -- Aiming to soften the blow from the Ukraine war, Chinese operators are offering financial incentives to users of transcontinental freight trains connecting to Russia and Europe. An operating company affiliated with Xi'an in March began covering war insurance payments for shippers transporting goods into and out of the Chinese city via the China-Europe Railway Express, or China Railway Express. This applies to all Russian and European destinations along the network. War insurance is being taken out for freight going through Russia, Belarus and Poland -- all neighbors to Ukraine. The policies hedge against the increased risk of damage...
