We all know that drinking too much is bad for us. But what about just a few glasses a week? Red wine has antioxidants, we've been told, so a few glasses are apparently 'good for you'. Other studies have suggested that low-to-moderate drinkers are less likely to have a heart attack than those who avoid drinking altogether. Wine is even included (in moderation) in the Mediterranean diet, one of the healthiest food plans on the planet! But a new study based on a huge data set from the United Kingdom now suggests that the J- or U- shaped curve of...

I'm telling you right off the bat here, that as far as personal innovation goes in this article, there's not all that much. All I'm doing here is taking someone else's brilliant idea and breaking it down for you a bit, offering a few suggestions and other applications. That said, I've never seen what I consider to be a really satisfactory explanation of the science behind the No-Knead Bread recipe, so I'm gonna try and fill that hole here. And what cool science it is. In 2006, Mark Bittman introduced the world to a recipe from Jim Lahey of Sullivan...

As tensions continue on the border with Russia, Ukrainian electricians, nurses, lawyers and even priests are volunteering for the country’s Territorial Defence Forces, a civilian reserve intended to support the regular army in case of a Russian invasion. FRANCE 24 met some citizen-soldiers at one of their bases in Kharkiv, 40 kilometres from the border. "Don't aim for the head, aim for the crotch. That way, you're sure to hit your target even if it ducks at the last minute," an Ukrainian instructor tells a small group of recruits dressed in camouflage clothing. Kalashnikovs in hand, the volunteers have been...

Closing schools worked. Closing restaurants worked. Wearing masks worked. We know they worked because the governors that ordered them said so. The CDC said so. The NIH said so. We were granted the greatest scientific experiment COVID-19 could offer (except for the cruise ships, which provided the original scientific experiment and was ignored). Many states had (and have) wildly different policies during the pandemic. The question we need to ask and data we need to study is, if the tight restrictions worked, did they result in fewer COVID-19 and moreover total excess deaths? Comparing one state to another, cherry-picking low-impacted...

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg assured that "the passage of the $1.2 trillion infrastructure legislation will not go down the tired old path of providing more lane-miles of roads and bridges that has been the traditional transportation strategy in the past. Traveling on roadways is one of the most dangerous things most Americans do on a regular basis. Reducing this travel will be the core objective of my plan." "The first prong of my plan will be to get people out of their cars," the Secretary said. "This means making alternatives to driving crucial. We need to improve crosswalks, add...

WASHINGTON, Thursday, Jan. 30. The full account in the TIMES, yesterday, of the Burnside Expedition was a timely relief, not only to the public, but to the Government. The suspense had become painful, and the brief official dispatch of Gen. BURNSIDE by no means relieved the anxiety. The messenger who brought this official dispatch, was requested by Gen. MCCLELLAN to write out a detailed statement of all that happened to the expedition after its sailing, for publication in the newspapers. The messenger replied that it was not necessary, as a correspondent of the NEW YORK TIMES had come on with...

California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom was found, yet again, flouting Wuhan coronavirus rules and regulations over the weekend as he continues to claim the state is in an "emergency." Newsom attended the NFC Championship Game between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49rs game. During the event, he snapped photos with NBA star Magic Johnson. Johnson is HIV positive and immunocompromised.

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - A legally armed jewelry store owner in San Bruno thwarted a smash-and-grab robbery attempt by five men at his shop, authorities said. The incident happened Friday around 1:06 p.m. at Maaz Jewelers, which is located inside the Tanforan Mall, police said. Authorities said five men who appeared to be in their teens or early 20s approached the store and one of them entered with a crowbar. Store surveillance video shows the suspect using the crowbar to smash a jewelry display case when the owner, Usman Bhatti, comes up and tries to pull the suspect away. Officers...

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards faced a chorus of criticism and questions this morning following an Associated Press report showing he knew about the death of Ronald Greene following a violent interaction with State Police hours after it happened in 2019, USA Today Network reports. Republican House Speaker Clay Schexnayder said in a statement that if the Democratic governor was complicit in a State Police cover-up it “would demonstrate gross misconduct and the highest level of deceit on behalf of the governor and others.” But the questions about the timing and extent of the governor’s knowledge about the Ronald Greene...

It is often said that we are at war with COVID-19. The universal elements are all there. International leaders like Xi Jinping, Boris Johnson, and Scott Morrison have all invoked wartime rhetoric. The U.S. mobilized a "war effort" with unprecedented industrial and human resources to combat an enemy virus. Both sides of this conflict continue to evolve and learn. One recursive of prolonged battle is that an enemy can adapt to its opponent through new behaviors or technologies. When the U.S. embarked upon WWII, we had inferior training, battleships, and aircraft. By the end, the allies dominated the seas and...

Hageman has also brought in just over half a million dollars since the start of the new year.

Friends, today’s Gospel shows Jesus driving the unclean spirit from the Gerasene demoniac. What we see here on vivid display is Jesus the miracle worker. Modern thinkers tend to be wary of this dimension. For instance, Thomas Jefferson took a straight razor to the pages of the Gospels and cut out everything that smacked of the supernatural—miracles, exorcisms, and so on. The problem, of course, is that he had to make an absolute mess of Mark’s Gospel, which is positively chock-a-block with such things. Jefferson’s contemporary, the great modern philosopher David Hume, wrote a powerfully influential text against miracles. He...

There’s no limit to the number of insurance-sponsored surgeries someone could haveThe Biden administration is pushing for more insurers, and thus anyone who buys their insurance, to cover transgender surgeries. Such genital, breast, and facial surgery, as well as hormone therapy and more, would be considered “medically necessary” for those wishing to identify with the other sex.Discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability is prohibited in federally funded health-care facilities under the Affordable Care Act, passed during the Obama administration. A proposed rule, issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on January 5,...

Mathieu Fleury, the Ottawa City Councillor of Rideau-Vanier Ward, has today announced his support for the government to launch a legal challenge to seize the remaining GoFundMe donations that had been collected online.“This morning, I have asked the city manager and city solicitor to immediately launch court proceedings targeting the millions of dollars in funds frozen by @GoFundMe so Ottawa taxpayers are not left holding the bag for these protests,” Fleury tweeted.

My wife is a naturalized American citizen who seethes over illegal immigration. When we see the stories on FOX News that highlight the cancellation of our border under the Biden administration, she always asks why the GOP isn’t doing a blessed thing about it. Drawing on the recent news that we have followed on Power Line, Miranda Devine channels and amplifies my wife’s thoughts in the New York Post column “GOP can’t complain about Biden’s migrants when they’re not stepping in.” She writes: It’s all very well for Kevin McCarthy and other GOP members of Congress to rant on Fox...

First signs of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, surfaced in Wuhan, Dec. 12, 2019. By December 2020, COVID-19 had reached every continent on the planet after the first cases were detected on Antarctica. Through entire COVID-19 endemic and pandemic, the remote island nation of Kiribati had managed to not have a single case of COVID-19 until Jan. 19, 2022. Kiribati is an isolated island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a population of roughly 122,000. Kiribati closed its borders 10 months ago, then reopened the country this month. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chartered a...

Elon Musk mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau amid this weekend's trucker protest against the Canadian federal government's vaccine mandate, calling Trudeau's administration the real "fringe minority." Replying to a video of Saturday's anti-vaccine protest in Ottawa, Musk tweeted: "It would appear that the so-called 'fringe minority' is actually the government." As the parade of trucks traveled across Canada to the nation's capital last week, Trudeau denounced the Freedom Convoy 2022, calling participants "small fringe minority who are on the way to Ottawa who are holding unacceptable views" at a press conference earlier in the week. Truckers had previously been...
