As tensions continue on the border with Russia, Ukrainian electricians, nurses, lawyers and even priests are volunteering for the country’s Territorial Defence Forces, a civilian reserve intended to support the regular army in case of a Russian invasion. FRANCE 24 met some citizen-soldiers at one of their bases in Kharkiv, 40 kilometres from the border.
"Don't aim for the head, aim for the crotch. That way, you're sure to hit your target even if it ducks at the last minute," an Ukrainian instructor tells a small group of recruits dressed in camouflage clothing.
Kalashnikovs in hand, the volunteers have been learning how to move in small groups without entering their comrades line of fire. For these Ukrainian Territorial Defence Forces reservists from Kharkiv, the enemy they're targeting is the tens of thousands of Russian soldiers massed just on the other side of the border.
The civilian-soldiers of the Territorial Defence all equip themselves at their own expenses. The old Kalashnikovs used for their training always remain at the base.
"The weapons would only be distributed in the event of an invasion. Meanwhile, with a permit, you can keep only a hunting weapon at home," explains Alexei Sus. That's not enough for him: the reservist has been saving up for his dream weapon: an US-made KelTec RFB 308 assault rifle.

From a memo from brandon?
This is good news and skills that will never be unnecessary. May their children and grandchildren follow suit.
The Russian soldiers-are their hearts really in it? Afghanistan taught them a lesson and the rest of the Baltics have good reason to not care for them.
That’s if they have a weapon. They are allowed a gun for hunting but not self defense.
“The Russian soldiers-are their hearts really in it?”
In this case the area they want speaks Russian.
KelTec RFB 308....
Very cool bullpup.
So many thoughts.
Load hear my prayer....May the people of Ukraine live in peace and not suffer the horrors of modern warfare. May the cannon fodder of Russia not be placed in the meat grinder that is modern warfare.
Next, if invaded by Russia’s military and political leaders, may they have to deal with so many body bags and grieving relatives that they are have to run and seek exile in other Countries.
Finally, interesting how the Leaders of Ukraine are counting on an armed and shooting skilled citizenry to help protect their country, while the Democratic Partly leaders in the US want nothing more than to disarm the public and to destroy shooting skills.
The Russian army practices a brutal form of hazing on everybody--leading to large numbers of suicides each year--that includes homosexual rape and general sadism. The brutality is beaten and raped into them, then they take it out on everybody else when given the opportunity.
Hence the amount of torture and depravity that comes out of any Russian military activity, whether it's in Syria, Georgia, Ukraine, or Chechnya in recent memory. Their hearts are definitely in it for the ultra violence and the old in out in out, as befits their training.
It’s their only hope. 1/3rd of Ukrainians have stated they are willing to take up arms to protect their homeland. That’s a lot of people to counter what will be heavy missile bombardment with no air support.
Different. $1,800? If foreign troops were massing in the border, and I were only allowed a hunting rifle, I’d get ammo for my hunting rifle, rather than worry about saving for an exotic import.
Russians in Afghanistan before most of their soldiers were even born.
