Even though the storm will be moving along quickly, it will strengthen off the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg. It is likely to become "the first bomb cyclone of the 2022 winter season” in the Northeast, he added. A bomb cyclone is defined as a storm that’s central pressure plummets by 0.71 of an inch of mercury (24 millibars) within 24 hours. That means the storm could whip up strong winds and pull in more moisture, helping it to fuel heavier snow rates as it chugs up the Eastern Seaboard. The heaviest snow...

Just the other day, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said during an interview with CNBC that her goal is to “never shut down again”, in reference to a lockdown that economically devastated small business owners. During this interview, Lightfoot insisted that schools weren’t a locus of the spread, which of course is in line with the CDC’s own guidance. “Our schools are not the source of significant spread. The issue is community spread. But we need to keep our kids in schools, which is what we’re going to do in Chicago,” she said, adding that: …she “will not allow” the union...

Novak Djokovic spent a day confined in an immigration detention hotel waiting for a court ruling and dealing with the prospect of deportation from Australia because of an issue with his visa application relating to COVID-19 vaccination regulations. The 20-time major champion from Serbia will spend at least another night in immigration detention, probably even the weekend, with his chances of playing in this month's Australian Open in limbo. With his visa canceled by Australian Border Force officials who rejected his evidence to support a medical exemption from the country's strict COVID-19 vaccination rules, Djokovic had to trade the practice...

In a one-on-one zoom interview with WRVA to discuss the end of his term, Governor Ralph Northam forcefully responded to questions over this week's response to the snowstorm, and the massive backup on I-95. Some drivers spent over 24 hours between Richmond and Washington. Northam took issue with characterizing the response as what went wrong, saying "sick and tired" of talking about it in those terms. In the interest of transparency, WRVA is posting the questions and response below.... Northam says people should be saying thank you to those responders who braved the elements to get to people. He also...

Explanation: That's not a young crescent Moon posing behind cathedral towers after sunset. It's Venus in a crescent phase. About 40 million kilometers away and about 2 percent illuminated by sunlight, it was captured with camera and telephoto lens in this series of exposures as it set in western skies on January 1 from Veszprem, Hungary. The bright celestial beacon was languishing in the evening twilight, its days as the Evening Star coming to a close as 2022 began. But it was also growing larger in apparent size and becoming an ever thinner crescent in telescopic views. Heading toward a...

Pelosi paid tribute to law enforcement officers, staff and others who made possible the peaceful transfer of power despite the attack by a mob seeking to stop President Biden's electoral win certification. "Because of them, Congress was able to defeat the insurrection," Pelosi said before leading a moment of silence on the House floor one year after the riot. The House is out of session, so the chamber was not full, aside from some Democratic lawmakers. The only two Republicans spotted by reporters were Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and her father, Dick Cheney. The former vice president was asked about...

In a statement blasting former President Trump and his allies on the one-year anniversary of the Capitol riot, Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker mistakenly attributed the death of a Capitol Police officer to the day’s events. Baker paid tribute to officer William Evans, lauding his heroism and bravery on January 6 as supporters of then-President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol. However, Evans was killed on April 2 when Noah Green, a 25-year-old supporter of Louis Farrakhan, drove into the officer at a barricade outside the Capitol building. Green, a self-identified “Follower of Farrakhan,” had likened the anti-Semitic leader of the Nation...

01/06/22 To watch Biden speaking is very hurtful to many people. They're the ones who tried to stop the peaceful transfer with a rigged election. Just look at the numbers. Does anybody really think that Biden beat Obama with the Black population in select Swing State cities, but nowhere else? That he would lose 18 out of 19 bellwether counties, and 27 out of 27 “toss up” House races, but somehow miraculously receive the most votes in American history with no coattails? That he would lose Florida, Ohio, and Iowa and win, even though it has never been done before?...

An additional "booster" dose of Moderna or Pfizer mRNA-based vaccine is needed to provide immunity against the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a study by researchers at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard. The results of this study, reported in the journal Cell, indicate that traditional dosing regimens of COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States do not produce antibodies capable of recognizing and neutralizing the Omicron variant. In late November, health officials in South Africa reported that a previously unknown variant of SARS-CoV-2 was rapidly spreading throughout the country. The variant,...

In direct defiance of Gov. Kathy Hochul, newly installed Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman wants to let school districts decide if kids must wear masks inside buildings. The Republican official signed a trio of executive orders Thursday — including one that would give Nassau’s school boards the ability to scrap student mask mandates. Arguing that Albany was imposing an “autocracy” upon the state, Blakeman repeatedly ripped Hochul’s mask decrees prior to the signing. “School boards are comprised of elected officials who make decisions based upon the unique circumstances of each district,” Blakeman said at a Thursday press conference. “They are...

Adoration of “G-men,” once celebrated in the nonpartisan war on Al Capone and organized crime and now leading the effort to round up Jan. 6 Capitol riot suspects and Trump supporters, is apparently waning. In the latest sign of how today’s politics is dividing support for major Washington institutions, the latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows more people than not view the FBI as the punishing political arm of President Joe Biden. Picking up on a comment from former Trump adviser Roger Stone, long caught in the wandering FBI Russia probe, the pollster found that likely voters, by a 46%-38% margin,...

A Florida man was arrested after allegedly attempting to strangle a woman at a bus stop using a shoelace over the weekend. The incident occurred at a Miami-Dade transit stop near the Miami International Airport on Sunday around 11 a.m., according to the Miami-Dade Police Department. Aaron K. Quinones, 27, stands accused of one count of attempted murder over the daytime attack on the 26-year-old woman that reportedly was caught on what appears to be surveillance video. Footage shared on social media by OnlyInDade, a tabloid blog redolent of WorldStarHipHop that describes itself as dedicated to “The Good, The Bad,...

It may be a respiratory disease, but COVID-19 impacts more than just the lungs. A whole host of vital organs can be affected, including the kidneys, and a recent study has finally worked out how. SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19 – can infect and directly damage the kidneys by causing scarring, according to research in the journal Cell Stem Cell. The resulting scar tissue could have long-term impacts on kidney function, the authors say. While the ability of the virus to bind and infect kidney cells is old news, the finer details of what exactly causes damage have...

Doug Kuzma, 61, died on January 3 after he was hospitalized for 10 days after catching the virus. The podcaster attended ReAwaken America in Dallas on the weekend of December 11. Kuzma posted images from the conference that showed large crowds. One picture was captioned "podcaster room overrun with people. Chaos." He later reported feeling ill but claimed that it was just his chronic bronchitis. Then on December 15, he said that he had a fever and had to call a doctor. Someone commented that he should have a Covid test, but Kuzma responded "no way." He added: "I'll die...
