Afghanistan has been reinvented as the best-equipped terrorist nation in the world, basking in the prestige of humiliating the world’s superpower.Joe Biden’s scripted or no-questions press conferences, and the clean-up afterward by Antony Blinken, Jake Sullivan, and Jen Psaki, have been some of the most misleading episodes in modern presidential history—mostly in what was not said rather than was exaggerated, warped, and misrepresented. The more Joe Biden mutters “The buck stops here” or “I take full responsibility,” the more we know he will not—and not just because of his now reduced mental state, but because 1) he repeats the same...

"But we found out at about the same time that the American University of Afghanistan was not considered a priority by the US government, and we didn't fit the qualifications, evidently, of being at risk. I understand totally that American citizens, green card holders, and those who helped the US military should be prioritized. However, our university people are very much at risk, yet we failed to be in that category according to the US government. We have had to depend on private assistance and on the Qatar government over the past two weeks to get our students out. Now...

NDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Studies show children have a substantially lower risk of contracting the coronavirus, and if they do get infected, the case is much less severe. And now scientists are beginning to understand why. Listen to this story The extra layer of protection resides in children’s nasal cavities. It’s an innate response kids are born with that’s designed to fight respiratory viruses of all kinds, including COVID-19. Scientists found through nasal swabs that kids showed higher concentrations of pattern recognition receptors — also known as PPRs — compared to adults. “It’s not necessarily that kids don’t get COVID,” Dr....

Exercise reduces the amount of calories burned at rest in people with obesity, according to a new study. The study found that people who exercise burn fewer calories on body maintenance, therefore markedly reducing the calorie burning gains of exercise. This reduction in energy burned at rest was most pronounced in individuals with obesity and also, to a lesser extent, in older adults. "When enrolled into exercise programs for weight loss, most people lose a little weight. Some individuals lose lots, but a few unlucky individuals actually gain weight," said Prof. John Speakman from SIAT, co-corresponding author of the study....

From anchorage stats to forward arrivals, ocean bookings, and inventory-to-sales numbers, all the latest data paints the same picture: The U.S. congestion crisis has never been more severe than it is now — and it’s getting worse. Hope for any relief this year has vanished. French carrier CMA CGM is the latest in a long line of market participants to push back its timeline on normalization. Capacity constraints “are expected to continue until the first half of 2022,” CMA CGM warned on Friday. Alarmingly, America’s import system — which is already stretched to the limit — looks like it will...

Following the withdrawal of the final U.S. troops from Afghanistan, a non-profit group is working to rescue dozens of military dogs abandoned at the Kabul airport. Veteran Sheepdogs of America has been tasked with the responsibility of retrieving 51 military dogs. Indeed, a photo began circulating over the weekend of several dog carriers in front of a helicopter, however those crates represent just a small portion of the total number of furry friends left behind.

After a summer of angry school board debates over mandatory masking at schools, Gov. Tom Wolf stepped up and took the heat himself Tuesday, defending his administration’s new order - and the about-face it took to issue it - to make masking mandatory for all students and staff at all Pennsylvania schools effective Sept. 7. The order by Acting Secretary of Health Alison Beam, Wolf said, comes in the face of a new wave of COVID-19 cases, driven by the Delta variant and a huge population of school children who aren’t even eligible for vaccinations yet. In Pennsylvania, the two-week...

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby did a media blitz Tuesday morning to defend the US government's actions in withdrawing from Afghanistan Monday He said the State Department can handle negotiating for US citizens' return because Americans get 'stranded in countries all the time' and need assistance He also blamed stranded Americans for waiting until the last minute after the last US jets left the country, despite Biden promising to stay until all were evacuated Kirby also shrugged off concerns about US weapons left behind in Afghanistan But he did admit that there is a 'lethality component' to some of what was...

Demagogues appeal to envy because they believe that promising to destroy the advantages enjoyed by others will win votes and inspire loyalty. Sometimes it does. As the envy-driven horrors of Rwanda and Nazi Germany demonstrate, pledging to disrupt the envied lives of a despised “other” can be a ticket to victory for a political candidate savvy enough to convince voters that he has their best interests at heart. More than 25 years ago, Doug Bandow, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, pronounced in his book The Politics of Envy: Statism as Theology that we “live in an age of...

And I just went, walked around the rooms, and I saw the young kids are sleeping, and they have no clue what happened this morning, that the last...

There have been some recent reports about hospitals, doctors and health officials now refusing to treat U.S. patients with vitamin D, ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine and another effective therapeutics. A recent notation about HHS changing liability waivers under the PREP Act, might provide some insight. “Enacted in December 2005, the PREP Act authorizes the Secretary of HHS (Secretary) to issue a declaration (called a PREP Act declaration) that provides immunity from tort liability (except for willful misconduct) for claims of loss caused, arising out of, relating to, or resulting from administration or use of countermeasures to diseases, threats and conditions determined by...

A buildup of coronavirus in the lungs is likely behind the steep mortality rates seen in the pandemic, a new study finds. The results contrast with previous suspicions that simultaneous infections, such as bacterial pneumonia or overreaction of the body's immune defense system, played major roles in heightened risk of death, the investigators say. The new study showed that people who died of COVID-19 had on average 10 times the amount of virus, or viral load, in their lower airways as did severely ill patients who survived their illness. Meanwhile, the investigators found no evidence implicating a secondary bacterial infection...

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Tuesday imposed a citywide curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Tuesday night as the city remained without power and residents struggled to find gasoline and other essentials. The announcement came with just three hours notice, but Cantrell characterized the curfew as a "proactive" public safety measure. New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said officers have made "several" looting arrests and said it was not widespread, but he refused to disclose how many there had been. Ferguson said he was withholding the number of arrests to prevent "a false narrative about this city."

Vaccines are designed to induce a strong and long-lasting immune response through the creation of memory T cells and B cells. The Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine, given during early childhood, and Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, given every 10 years, are known to elicit a protective response against the diseases from which the vaccines get their names. But these vaccines may have an unexpected bonus: It's possible that they also elicit cross-reactive memory T cells capable of responding to protein targets called antigens that are present in other microbes that cause diseases—including the viral antigens in SARS-CoV-2. The concept is that pre-existing memory...
