And the United Nations is warning that a "humanitarian catastrophe" may be emerging in Afghanistan as civilians flee the oncoming Taliban. The loss of Helmand's provincial capital comes after years of toil and blood spilled by American, British and allied NATO forces. Hundreds of foreign troops were killed there over the course of the nearly two-decade war.The insurgents have...

LONDON (AP) — For a large chunk of the past 20 years, British troops fought hard to ensure that the southern Afghanistan province of Helmand did not fall into the hands of the Taliban. Confirmation Friday that the Taliban had captured Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand, had particular resonance in Britain. The vast majority of the U.K.’s 457 casualties occurred in the province as British troops fought with American and allied NATO forces. The Camp Bastion complex in Helmand was the headquarters for British military operations from 2006 until 2014. With the Taliban advancing rapidly and now in control...

Independence Pass east of Aspen is listed as closed according to the state’s transportation department, but the road was not shut down Wednesday because of mudslides but rather to lessen traffic. Earlier in the day, the Colorado Department of Transportation marked the road as closed on its travelers update site http://www.cotrip.org because of a “safety closure due to mudslide,” and Pitkin County Undersheriff Alex Burchetta said Wednesday afternoon the county sent out an alert about 3:30 p.m. as such, based on that information. However, there were not any mudslides and the messaging “evolved” and was changed by CDOT, Burchetta said....

Former President Donald Trump recently gave a colorful recounting of his historic call with Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada last year in the shadow of potential peace negotiations with the Afghan government. "We're going to come back and hit you harder than any country has ever been hit," Trump said he told Akhundzada, recounting the threatened consequences if the Taliban failed to make peace. "And your village, where I know you are and where you have everybody, that's going to be the point at which the first bomb is dropped." A few hours after that March 2020 call, Trump put an...

If you ask 10 different people what online banking means to them, don’t be surprised if you get 10 different responses. But in the minority community, there’s a very special meaning. Opportunity. Among some minorities, you may hear online banking called a “second chance,” “lifeline” or even “entry into the real world.” In the black community, which has often been left behind by the “brick and mortar” banks, partnering with online lenders and “cyber banks” have given them a seat at the table they never had in the past. One only need look at the checkered history that the bank...

The Pope that Broke the Camel’s BackWe have put up with a lot as Catholics, and we all have our breaking points—some at different moments and for different reasons.“The straw that broke the camel’s back” refers to increasing the load on a beast of burden until the “final straw” makes the beast collapse. “Beast of burden” is a key concept, as we are talking about an animal that does not have a glorious existence, and is actually quite rugged, yet even the camel has its limits. In addition, we might imagine a scenario wherein the camel is treated in such...

When the pace of vaccinations in the U.S. first began to slow, President Joe Biden backed incentives like million-dollar cash lotteries if that’s what it took to get shots in arms. But as new coronavirus infections soar, he’s testing a tougher approach. (snip) Still, while more severe measures — such as mandating vaccines for interstate travel or changing how the federal government reimburses treatment for those who are unvaccinated and become ill with COVID-19 — have been discussed, the administration worried that they would be too polarizing for the moment. That’s not to say they won’t be implemented in the future,...

The 1973 Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade is about to be put on life support and the plug may be pulled. Speculation is running high that SCOTUS may reverse Roe in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Arguments will be heard in October. The Mississippi law bans abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. This is a direct challenge to Roe, which says states may not prohibit abortion until viability of the child. If the court upholds the Mississippi law, then the heart of Roe will be gone. States will be free to restrict and even ban abortion. A...

A meeting Monday evening in which the Fox Chapel Area School District approved a universal indoor mask mandate for its facilities became heated when some in attendance began jeering board members and one man raised his arm in a Nazi salute toward the board. The actions have now prompted a rebuke from the superintendent. The incident occurred just after the board voted unanimously to approve the district’s health and safety plan and followed comments from about 20 members of the public who were closely split on whether a mask mandate should be implemented. Superintendent Mary Catherine Reljac proposed adding an...

Contrarianism has run amok in the United States. It is a byproduct of moving into postmodernism. Instead of focusing on what is true, we now all focus on our personal truths with no regard to actual truth. If we believe it is true, then by God in heaven it is true! Combine that with our increasing divisions as a society, and many people's truth is now based on being exactly opposite their opposing tribe. Everyone prides themselves on their individual thought when really their thoughts are not individual but based on tribal consent. No one sees it that way, but...

Children as young as four will be able to change their gender at school without their parents’ consent under guidance introduced in Scotland. Any pupil who decides they want to switch gender must be supported and listened to in school following the Scottish Government advice. The guidance applies in primary schools, where the youngest children are only four or five, because ‘recognition and development of gender identity can occur at a young age’. It also tells teachers not to question a child who says they want to transition to live as a boy or a girl - and instead ask...
