Independence Pass east of Aspen is listed as closed according to the state’s transportation department, but the road was not shut down Wednesday because of mudslides but rather to lessen traffic.
Earlier in the day, the Colorado Department of Transportation marked the road as closed on its travelers update site http://www.cotrip.org because of a “safety closure due to mudslide,” and Pitkin County Undersheriff Alex Burchetta said Wednesday afternoon the county sent out an alert about 3:30 p.m. as such, based on that information.
However, there were not any mudslides and the messaging “evolved” and was changed by CDOT, Burchetta said. A CDOT spokesperson confirmed there were no slides.
The agency is marking the stretch of Highway 82 over Independence Pass as closed to keep away traffic trying to detour around the Interstate 70 closure through Glenwood Canyon, the spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon.
Independence Pass goes between Aspen and Leadville, Colorado.
How many innocent people suffered an Injury or Loss from this FRAUD they committed? Where are thew Lawsuits and Restraining Orders? Shouldn’t this also be Criminal in Nature?
Just more politicians playing CYA, while letting the professionals hang out to dry.
Wait as minute - this is the “professionals” doing?
So now, at least in Colorado, exactly what is the difference in the behavior of the professionals (”believe the science”) and the politicians?
Looks to me that we need a vaccine to ward off both the politicians and the scurvy professionals.
And it is happening all over the country ...
Isn’t IP still shut all winter?
The more I see what is happening to the east of me, the more I don’t mind being cut off from it.
The locals need Independence Pass, big vehicles just get stuck on it. I used the northern detour through Steamboat recently, except for Steamboat itself it wasn’t that bad. Next time I’ll take the shortcut that skips Steamboat.
Glenwood Canyon will be open (though slow) pretty soon.
It. is. for. the. greater. good.
It’s not like the godless communist government there in Colorado believes in morality, ethics or even the basic concept of human trust.
Lying and gaslighting is baked into the Democratic party-way.
I’ve driven that road and it is beautiful and a bit rugged especially in rain or snow.
I imagine IP is closed all Winter.
“Glenwood Canyon will be open (though slow) pretty soon.”
There have been rumblings within the federal DOT to close I-70 through the canyon and rebuild it someplace else.
The central mountain area of Colorado is some of the most beautiful land in on the planet.
My stupid GPS routed me over independence pass a few weeks ago to avoid I-70 closure. I would have loved to be routed a different way. At night in the rain, with a Toyota SUV, not knowing how narrow that road is, that was a kinda scary drive. GPS doesn’t really show how narrow and curvy that road is. Should have taken the routes further north or south. Maybe “closure” is the only way DOT could fool GOOGLE/Apple maps.
I’ve done Independence Pass in the summer.
Very pretty but it would be difficult if busy.
It sure is!

Oooh, I feel for you. How many hours did that trip take?
White knuckles gripping the steering wheel. Yes, you may only be driving 5 mph, but one wrong move and you’ll be doing 40 mph.
Down a cliff.
…and fire the people involved. There should be immediate and career consequences for lying.
If these are publicly funded and maintained roads, they should be open for everyone. Too often we’ve got bureaucrats of lying and making decisions,

Drone footage of I-70 Glenwood Canyon damage from mudslides
Shows extensive damage to I-70 that in today’s economy will take a “while” to repair. E&w bound lanes are out.
Damage was caused by recent fires in CO. Beginning of video shows hiway damage, remainder is cause! Repairs cannot be completed until fire damage is fixed, or mudslides will re-occur.
