The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday issued a new moratorium on evictions that would last until October 3, ending some of the political pressure being placed on President Joe Biden. The new moratorium could help keep millions in their homes as the coronavirus’ delta variant has spread and states have been slow to release federal rental aid. It would temporarily halt evictions in counties with “substantial and high levels” of virus transmissions and would cover areas where 90 percent of the U.S. population lives. The announcement was something of a reversal for the Biden administration after saying...

President Biden said Tuesday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would announce a new moratorium on evictions later in the day — before admitting that its order was “not likely to pass constitutional muster.” The New York Times reported earlier Tuesday that the new freeze would likely be in effect for up to 60 days and apply to places with high rates of coronavirus infection. A previous nationwide eviction freeze expired on Saturday after congressional Democrats failed to garner enough support for an extension before House members left DC to begin their August recess. The White House had urged...

Violence has surged across the country since early May when the Taliban launched a nationwide offensive soon after the US-led foreign forces began their...

Only around 10% of Americans have had confirmed positive Covid tests, but four to six times as many have likely had the infection.
