A black man who was paralyzed after he was shot in the back by a white police officer in southeastern Wisconsin filed a civil lawsuit Thursday accusing the officer of excessive force. Jacob Blake Jr was shot by Kenosha Officer Rusten Sheskey in August while Blake was about to get into an SUV during a domestic dispute. Blake's federal complaint against Sheskey, the only defendant, is seeking unspecified damages. The shooting of Blake, captured on bystander video, turned the nation's spotlight on Wisconsin during a summer marked by protests over police brutality and racism.

Severe storms, including tornadoes, today left a path of destruction across parts of central Alabama, and left at least five people dead in Calhoun County. ... At a 10 p.m. press conference, Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade said the path of the storm extended from River Road in Ohatchee through Wellington to Kimberly Road in Piedmont. He said all search and rescue efforts have ended for the night, but authorities are unaware of any unreported damage.

The heads of social media giants Facebook, Twitter, and Google faced off against lawmakers on Capitol Hill. They’re testifying in a hearing on disinformation on their platforms. And Facebook is facing a $15 billion class-action lawsuit alleging the firm illegally tracked the online activities of its users when they aren’t on the platform. That’s in violation of the federal Wiretap Act. While Facebook appealed to the Supreme Court, the firm was rejected. That means the lawsuit will move forward.
