Attorney General William Barr said Tuesday that some state governors’ efforts to fight the coronavirus “infringes on a fundamental right” of American residents. Barr said in an interview on “The Hugh Hewitt Show” that governments in the U.S. need to “do a better job” of ensuring coronavirus restrictions are “properly targeted” and do not unnecessarily infringe on constitutional rights. He added that currently, the country is facing “unprecedented burdens on civil liberties.” “When a governor acts, especially when a governor does something that intrudes upon or infringes on a fundamental right or a Constitutional right, they’re bounded by that,” the...

New York started collecting blood samples Monday from 3,000 randomly selected people for antibody testing as part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The results may provide a more accurate assessment of how many have been infected with the new coronavirus, but could also serve as a platform for research into potential treatments. There is, however, some concern about the accuracy of the tests, and questions as to whether enough hospitals and clinics will have access to the materials -- and use them properly. Richard Serino, distinguished visiting fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's National Preparedness...

Posted on April 20, 2020 by Msgr. Charles Pope An Easter Exhortation for Tough Times As we all know, this was perhaps the strangest Easter that any of us have experienced at least collectively. The liturgical calendar shouts new life and victory over the grave, and yet throughout the world, many are hunkered down in the fear of death. Despite the Easter glow these are dark days for many who suffer illness or economic stress. But, to be sure, the first Easter was experienced in great uncertainty and danger. Recent readings from Scripture have this theme. The readings in...

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday announced that is authorizing the first coronavirus test that allows patients to collect samples at home themselves. The FDA said the emergency authorization would make coronavirus testing easier and smoother by allowing some patients to collect their test samples without having to leave home. The patients, after using the nasal swab, would then mail the sample to LabCorp, the company that makes the test, to be tested. “With this action, there is now a convenient and reliable option for patient sample collection from the comfort and safety of their home,” FDA Commissioner...

A New York Times reporter heavily implied Fox News had a hand in a Brooklyn man's untimely passing from the coronavirus. But the same reporter had her own skepticism about the virus. A New York Times report on the tragic passing of a Brooklyn bar owner recklessly implied Fox News’s coverage of the Wuhan coronavirus contributed to the man’s untimely death. Worse yet, the report was authored by a woman who expressed skepticism over the magnitude of the crisis during the same time period her story faulted Fox.In an April 18 story on the death of beloved Bay Ridge bar...

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" (Matt. 5:9). God’s peace cushions the soul during difficult times. I remember reading about what is called "the cushion of the sea." The ocean surface is often greatly agitated, but as you descend, the water becomes increasingly calm. At its greatest depths the ocean is virtually still. Oceanographers dredging ocean bottoms have found animal and plant remains that appear to have been undisturbed for hundreds of years. Similarly, Christians can experience a cushion of peace in their souls regardless of their troubled surroundings. That's because they belong to...

The coronavirus pandemic has drastically upended life across America, included a time-honored spring tradition — Girl Scout cookie season.

Prayers up for all the families suffering from the impact of this virus. And we're still praying that the spread starts fading with the warmer Spring weather and that an effective treatment and vaccine are developed before the next flu season starts. And we pray that our people are allowed to go back to work very soon and that our economy comes roaring back. Meanwhile, we may be hurt and slowed down somewhat, but we have faith in the long-run that "what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger." God willing, America will survive and we will survive and we...

Then there is Joseph Williams, who made headlines this week. The 26-year-old had been held for six days on a heroin possession charge. With bail set at $2,500, a deposit of just $250 would have secured a bond and set him free. Evidently, the amount was too much. When he did walk out as one of the 164 [freed by Chronister and Ficarrotta] he spoke with the media. “I feel wonderful,” he told a reporter from Spectrum Bay News 9. The next night, a crowd of more than a dozen gathered on Ash Avenue in Progress Village. Amid the flagrant...

C'mon; I know that politicians, and Democrats specifically, have less than no respect for the American people, but do they really think we're dumb enough to believe they're actually going to permit Joe Biden to be their candidate against President Trump? Biden can't tell you how many fingers he's holding up while standing in front of a mirror. He is stunningly incoherent, a pitiful example of diminished capacity. Additionally, he's not far from being indicted for allegedly sexually molesting Tara Reade, his former aide.

A new study unveiled Monday from the University of Southern California (USC) with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health discovered infections of the novel Wuhan coronavirus to be far more widespread with a lower fatality rate than initially thought. The California researchers conducted rapid antibody testing of a representative sample of adults and found that approximately 2.8 to 5.6 percent of L.A. County’s adult population already had coronavirus antibodies present, translating to 221,000 to 442,000 past-infected people. The new estimate dwarfs the nearly 8,000 cases that had been reported at the time the study took place April 10-11....

The federal government has flexed its muscle to blunt the economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic, and most voters back the intervention. As Congress looks to build on the largest emergency spending plan in U.S. history, 63% of registered voters said they approve of the expansion of the government’s role in the economy in response to the outbreak, an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday found. Another 30% of respondents said they disapproved.

Russia, China and Iran are using similar narratives to promote disinformation campaigns against the U.S. amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a State Department report obtained by Politico. The three countries are pushing campaigns that suggesting that the virus came from U.S. troops and that it’s an American bio weapon being used for political purposes. The campaigns also claim that the three countries are managing the pandemic better than the United States, which has more reported cases than all three combined. State-owned media and government ministries alike are pushing the false narratives. According to Politico, Russia’s defense ministry has pushed...

Abolishing group gatherings is fine if such limits apply to everyone, but if they only apply to churchgoers thatÂ’s a moral and legal problem. The COVID-19 panic has prompted local and state government officials to temporarily shut down businesses, large group gatherings, and anything else they deem unsafe. Unfortunately, some local officials have taken this too far by targeting religious people. In some states, people of faith have filed lawsuits alleging local authorities have violated their free exercise and free speech rights.Even during a global health scare, we must fiercely protect our First Amendment rights. LetÂ’s go through some recent...

Gov. Gavin Newsom has issued an order banning large gatherings because of the coronavirus crisis, and Sacramento-area law enforcement officials warned last week that they will start citing people who violate the ban. So why would state Capitol officials approve a Monday protest against stay-at-home orders that was advertised as attracting as many as 500 people? It’s not entirely clear. The Capitol’s protest permit website shows the planned demonstration was permitted for noon on the west steps of the Capitol building, which is fenced off as part of a renovation project. The California Highway Patrol’s capitol protection section, which issues...

Fox News senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano said on Tuesday that stay-at-home orders from governors across the U.S. are unconstitutional because creating laws is a power delegated solely to legislatures “The government has to recognize that the rights that are in the Constitution still exist in bad times as well as in good and it has to treat people equally,” Napolitano told “Fox & Friends.” “If you can get in a line of cars to buy a cheeseburger at McDonald's, you can get in a line of cars to express your opinion about the government."

A Dutch beauty blogger who had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to appear on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" is the latest to call out the daytime host for her cold demeanor.
