For the baby-boomer generation (or at least the counterculture segment within it) the summer of 1967 became known as The Summer of Love.Actually, most of us boomers never experienced it. Certainly, 1967 wasn't a blissful, carefree summer of love for the hundreds of thousands of Americans serving in Vietnam. It didn't feel much like love in my hometown of Detroit either. Fifty years ago this week, on July 23, 1967 (a Sunday, as it is this year), deadly riots erupted in the Motor City. They lasted through Friday, July 28, when, with help from the National Guard (including Detroit Tigers' second...

Time and again in the Gospels, Jesus warned His listeners, "For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it" (Matt. 16:25). This applies directly to our Christian colleges, universities, and seminaries. If we try to "save our lives" by capitulating to worldly standards, we will "lose our lives" in the process.More than 20 years ago, a fellow-Old Testament scholar talked with me about the challenges his seminary was facing. At that time, there was a dispute about women in ministry, and his school was receiving some pressure over the...

In a matter of hours, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. “It just feels almost unfair to have spent almost 30 years in the NFL, and had as much as I’ve had,” Jerry said, “and still get to be a part of something like this.” “This is so substantive to me. I’ve experienced some wonderful things, and this is right there with the very best. It’s very humbling. Very humbling," he said.

When Gerald Greiner walked into his first job as a safety manager for Eisenmann Corporation, a subcontractor building the paint shop at the Mercedes plant in Vance Alabama back in 2013, he was surprised to see Eastern Europeans pouring concrete, erecting steel and fitting pipe at the company's expansion project. A week after an attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act failed, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he’d consider a bipartisan effort to continue payments to insurers to avert a costly rattling of health insurance markets. McConnell told reporters Saturday there is “still a chance” the Senate could revive the measure to repeal and replace “Obamacare,” but he acknowledged the window for that is rapidly closing. The Kentucky senator noted Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee is working on “some kind of bipartisan approach” that would involve subsidies for insurance companies. Alexander recently said he will work with the...

Let’s march divided to strike united Cordialiter Blog July 29, 2017 In recent years many blog sites have sprung up, run by members of the faithful tied to the Traditional Mass and which are making life difficult for all kinds of modernists, now in control of the various newsprints, wherein grave dogmatic and moral errors are diffused. Nobody can say that I’m exaggerating in my criticism of the modernist propaganda: the Eucharist is only a symbol of the Body of Christ; hell is not eternal; all religions are good; divorce by law must not be hindered; pre-marital cohabitation has pre-sacramental...
