HOUSTON - (TEXAS TRIBUNE) Mark White, a Democrat who served as the governor of Texas from 1983 to 1987, has died at the age of 77.
During his time in office, White's most notable achievements came in education reform. In 1984, he signed landmark legislation that included the famous "no-pass, no play" law that said students must pass their classes to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.
In a statement Saturday afternoon, Gov. Greg Abbott said that White devoted his life to making Texas better. Abbott also noted that his relationship with White dated back to when he was a young lawyer in Houston.

May Mark White, the last rational Texas Democrat, rest in peace.

Common sense is an achievement? We have a low bar in this nation.
That said, I know nothing about the governor. May he RIP.
White was considered a liberal but, back then, Texas liberals still had some common sense. Plus, the governorship in Texas is actually a weak office. He can veto bills and commute death sentences but the Lt. Governor actually has more power. The Texas legislature, over the last few decades, has become solidly conservative apart from some cities and the Rio Grande Valley. A liberal governor would not be able to get a lot of liberal nonsense passed. Their main work would be rejecting the conservative legislation that comes out of legislature.
One of about 4 Demonrats that I can say I’ve liked in my life. Sympathy to his family.
Back in the day Texas Democrats were more conservative than the Republicans.
“He can veto bills and commute death sentences”
He can veto bills, but cannot commute death sentences.
Bingo
Rip
RIP.
He was an old drunk but did Texas right.
Being born in 1970, Gov. White is the first governor I can remember. I was not very pleased in 1984 for one week about the no pass no play rule, since I was going to miss a football game. Pissed me off, but the next 3 years I never missed a gamr.
I understand that and I’m glad you got it together.....;)
