Here in Tokyo, folks, Japanese news article claims that anger with President Obama is increasingly rapidly and that it escalated into a massive rally against him and his health care and tax/spend policies, to the tune of ONE MILLION DEMONSTRATORS in Washington, D.C. on Saturday...

You can see why markets and governments both like to blame Lehman Brothers for the "Great Contraction". Such wishful thinking shields investors from the nasty reality that deeper forces are at work: it absolves officialdom from its own destructive role in fixing the price of credit too low for 20 years, luring us into debt. As my colleague Jeremy Warner puts it, Lehman no more caused the economic convulsions of the last year than the assassination caused the First World War. There was the little matter of a rising Germany then, and rising China now. Both scrambled the international system,...

“If this was a white girl, this guy would be in jail right now.” The crash happened about 9:10 p.m. Friday, when Henderson and companion Victor Keith were walking north on Seventh Avenue. Henderson, police said later, was walking in the road. A pickup truck hit her from behind, vaulting her off the hood and onto the east shoulder of the street. “The male counterpart that was walking with our victim in the crash, he went over and actually punched the window of the driver’s vehicle out and demanded their money, which they gave him,” Crews said. Asked if he...

President Obama has consistently declared Afghanistan "the good war" that is "a war of necessity" which is "fundamental to the defense of our people," although recently Obama also stated that "victory" was not necessarily the goal in Afghanistan. In an amazing declaration of historical ignorance, Obama explained "I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur." How we win without "victory" is but one conundrum the US military leadership must solve to execute the president's policy. In view of the president's ambivalence, it...

Dawkins Now, there is a certain class of sophisticated modern theologian who will say something like this: "Good heavens, of course we are not so naive or simplistic as to care whether God exists. Existence is such a 19th-century preoccupation! It doesn't matter whether God exists in a scientific sense. What matters is whether he exists for you or for me. If God is real for you, who cares whether science has made him redundant? Such arrogance! Such elitism." Well, if that's what floats your canoe, you'll be paddling it up a very lonely creek. The mainstream belief of the...

Glenn Beck's recent successes in getting Van Jones to leave the White House, a member of the National Endowment for the Arts reassigned, and pushing ACORN out of next year's census are more examples that the "right-wing noise machine" is no more. It is now part and parcel of the mainstream media. The convergence between alternative, conservative media and the "mainstream" media has been happening for years. I made the case before that the conservative media can force the press, which is a part of the MSM, to cover stories it may not otherwise give attention. One reader asked for...

America doesn't lose wars on battlefields. In fact, the only war the nation has lost -- Vietnam -- was lost in the political arena. That's precisely where Barack Obama will lose Afghanistan. The loss, principally, will be thanks to the left in his party and his own limits as a commander in chief. For a liberal like Mr. Obama to make the claim that Afghanistan is a "war of necessity" means that the United States has a critical national security stake there. Yes, during the Bush presidency liberals scored rhetorical points by maintaining that the "real" war was in Afghanistan,...

The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced;I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right;if anyone wishes to oppose me,let us...

WASHINGTON.Last March, during the Supreme Court argument concerning the Federal Election Commission's banning of a political movie, several justices were aghast. Suddenly and belatedly they saw the abyss that could swallow the First Amendment. Justice Antonin Scalia was "a little disoriented" and Justice Samuel Alito said "that's pretty incredible." Chief Justice John Roberts said: "If we accept your constitutional argument, we're establishing a precedent that you yourself say would extend to banning the book" -- a hypothetical 500-page book containing one sentence that said "vote for" a particular candidate. What shocked them, but should not have, were statements by a...

In his speech before Congress Barack Obama said: "If you misrepresent what's in the plan, we will call you out." Obama needs to call himself out. Just so there is no confusion, Planned Parenthood's PROTECTING ABORTION ACCESS page explains: "Planned Parenthood believes every woman should have access to the full range of reproductive health care." There is no doubt, when you say "reproductive health care" to a Planned Parenthood crowd, that includes abortion. Either Candidate Obama didn't tell the truth to Planned Parenthood when he promised them he would both subsidize those who wish to get abortion coverage from their...

When Glenn Beck promised a big story for the end of the week, I remember thinking, “who does he have on tape?” It could have been anything and I would have believed it; Pelosi steering and crafting legislation to benefit her rich husband, video of the First Organizer with Larry Sinclair, anything but what it was.

After consultation with many fellow supporters of my proposed change in the California Republican Party Bylaws, I made the very difficult decision just a few minutes ago to withdraw the change. To make a long story short, while I am confident that the votes were there to pass the change at the convention, the matter was becoming extremely divisive due to a lot of misinformation being spread about the proposal, and its effects.

A split is emerging between the United States and Japan over the new Tokyo government's anti-globalisation rhetoric and its threats to end a refueling agreement for US ships in support of the war in Afghanistan. Yukio Hatoyama, the leader of the Democratic Party of Japan, has caused alarm in Washington after publishing an article blaming the US for the ills of capitalism, the global economy and "the destruction of human dignity". He also intends to examine an agreement that permits US warships to dock at Japanese ports, in violation of the nation's non-nuclear principles. Mr Hatoyama says he will also...

WASHINGTON -- New York County District Attorney Robert Morgenthau left his home turf and came to the nation's capital on Tuesday to sound the alarm about a "blossoming relationship" between Iran and Venezuela. Comparing the situation to the lead up to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, Morgenthau warned of growing threats--involving missiles, nuclear ventures and terrorist training--that Iran and Venezuela are now cultivating, together, "in our backyard." "Axis of unity" is the label that Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez have themselves chosen for their alliance. The rise of this partnership, according to Morgenthau, dates from Ahmadinejad's...
