The Washington Post reckons you can gauge the state of the economy by the state of men’s underwear drawers. That’s because we’re supposed to assume that men will purchase underwear at a relative steady rate. The theory: “Sales of men’s underwear typically are stable because they rank as a necessity. But during times of severe financial strain, men will try to stretch the time between buying new pairs, causing underwear sales to dip.” So apparently we are to believe that America got itself – and the rest of the world – into this recession because people were splurging on homes,...

A team of scientists in the US has discovered two new antibodies that could lead to an HIV vaccine. Researchers from the Scripps Institute in California, the International Aids Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and US-based biotech companies Theraclone Sciences and Monogram Biosciences discovered these two broadly neutralising antibodies using high-throughput screening of serum from patients infected with HIV.When people are first infected with HIV, they produce antibodies that are specific to the infected strain, but a few years later some start to make antibodies active against other strains of the virus - known as broadly neutralising antibodies. 'There is a huge variability in...

A lawyer whose work has included myriad civil rights disputes and who has practice before the U.S. Supreme Court is accusing President Obama of trying to push his social agenda by reaching out directly to young children, bypassing parents who may challenge his statements. And what Obama plans to do on Sept. 8 with a planned speech directly to students in public schools across the United States may even be illegal, according to Mathew D. Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel as well as dean of Liberty University School of Law. "Obama has pushed his political agenda to the extreme by...

THERE were angry clashes in a city centre today as right-wing protesters fought with anti-fascist campaigners in a busy shopping street. A planned demonstration by The English Defence League in central Birmingham descended into violence as the group charged along New Street, close to the city's main train station. One onlooker said: "There were about 250 people in total, fighting and throwing bottles at each other." The disorder spilled onto the adjoining Bennetts Hill, a street lined with a number of pubs, popular with shoppers. Dozens of riot police worked to contain the disturbance and a police helicopter hovered overhead....

Campaigning for GOP gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie and his lieutenant governor pick Kim Gudadagno, Pawlenty said New Jersey needs to reform taxes and other policies that inhibit business growth and job creation.

Reporter Jim Rutenberg wrote an unfavorable profile of former NY Lt Governor Betsy McCaughey and her efforts to educate the public about the dangers of Obamacare in today's NY Times: Her work has, however, proved to be a boon to opponents of Mr. Obama’s health care plans, if occasionally judged as over the line even by some of them. She incorrectly stated in July that a Democratic bill in the House would “absolutely require” counseling sessions for Medicare recipients “that will tell them how to end their life sooner,” drawing a “Pants on Fire” rating from the PolitiFact fact-checking Web...

Dear CCPS Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members: Earlier this week, we learned that President Obama was preparing to deliver a nationwide live speech to school children on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at noon. The stated purpose of the speech is to encourage students to set and achieve challenging goals as well as take responsibility for their learning. The speech is expected to last approximately 15 minutes. We have been assured that this is not a political activity and that the speech will not have political messages; however, we have not had the opportunity to view the speech. Once we...

One of the messages I hear over and over during conversations with security professionals is that security is everyone's responsibility. Yet, if I didn't work in this field, issues of security would remain very far off my radar. I recently asked several of my friends if they had ever heard of a fusion center. All of them looked at me strangely and politely changed the subject. And why should they have heard of such a thing? The public has no role in such initiatives. But should they? In my two years of covering the security field, I continue to be...

EAST MORICHES, N.Y. (CBS) ― An allegedly drunk driver brought down part of a house in Suffolk County when he crashed through the home's second floor. From the second floor, the vehicle dropped down to the first floor vertically, with it's headlights pointing toward the sky. Homeowner John Sarli says he's lucky to be alive. He was the only person at the home, sleeping on a couch in the den when he heard the crash and the sound...

Those who are whipping up hysteria over the president's address are playing a dangerous game with an unhinged segment of public opinion. While it long ago crossed the borders of reason and civility, the hysteria over healthcare reform is -- at some level -- understandable, because wellness and infirmity are really just stand-ins for those most terrifying of issues, life and death. But there is no similar way to rationalize the bizarre controversy now raging over President Obama's plan to deliver a brief televised address on Tuesday to the nation's grammar school children. According to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan,...

Children gathered into state controlled “education” facilities across the nation will break from the standard routine of instruction at the hands of lower-level state employees and directly experience the teleprompted wisdom of Barack Hussein Obama during a speech planned for this coming Tuesday, September 8th. By focusing on the most malleable, defenseless and controlled of American minds, The One hopes to reclaim political momentum and combat the ungrateful, ignorant masses who have recently risen in vocal opposition to his plans for socialized medicine in America.
