Tech Help Please! I keep getting kicked off of the internet on my desktop computer, my router and modem are functioning properly, as I have my Roku TV on too and it doesn't ever skip a beat. The computer is a year old refurbished Dell I bought from Amazon, super fast, with Win 10 and I'm running the Brave browser. It didn't come with a WiFi adapter so I bought a TP-Link USB Wifi Adapter, (single band), for PC N150 Wireless Network Adapter for Desktop and it worked fine for about 6 months and then I started getting internet cut-offs,...

“Beginning with Windows Insiders builds this Summer, we will include an in-house custom-built Linux kernel to underpin the newest version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL),” explains Microsoft program manager Jack Hammons. “The kernel itself will initially be based on version 4.19, the latest long-term stable release of Linux. The kernel will be rebased at the designation of new long-term stable releases to ensure that the WSL kernel always has the latest Linux goodness.” Microsoft’s integration of Linux in Windows 10 will interface with a userspace installed via the Windows Store. It’s a big shift for Microsoft, and marks...

My computer has been running fine until now, malwarebytes runs each day as does Windows Defender. I turned my computer off today and came home, turned it on and I get a message that says: The stub received bad data...so far this is when I try to get into malwarebytes program and windows defender. NOt sure about other programs. All of my updates seem to have disappeared. What is a program I can use online to check for a virus? I am not computer savvy when it comes to computer problems. Thanks. Running Windows 10.
  • Microsoft to make saying no to Windows 10 update easier

Microsoft officials said late on June 27 that the new update experience -- with clearer "upgrade now, schedule a time, or decline the free offer" -- will start rolling out this week. Microsoft will also revert to making clicking on the Red X at the corner of the Windows 10 update box dismiss the update, rather than initiate it, as it has done for the past several weeks. Microsoft officials said they are making the change "in response to customer feedback". Update: Here's the full, updated statement from Microsoft about the coming change, attributable to Executive Vice President of Windows...
  • Microsoft forced to pay £7,500 after Windows 10 began automatically installing on woman's computer

Microsoft has been forced to pay £7,500 ($10,000) in compensation to a woman after its new Windows 10 operating system automatically installed on her computer. Teri Goldstein’s computer – which previously ran on Windows 7 - became unusable after the software tried to download without her approval. Relying on her device to run her travel agency in Sausalito, California, she went to the Microsoft's support team seeking answers, The Seattle Times reports. But after having no success and her computer still being unresponsive, she sued the company for the price of a new computer and the loss of earnings. the report...
  • Windows 10 Anniversary Update: A guide to the builds (Major Win10 Update on the way...)

This summer, one year after the initial launch of Windows 10, Microsoft will release its first major update: the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. It will be delivered in the usual way -- via Windows Update -- and will install automatically on its own. However, if you're curious (or apprehensive) about the upcoming update, you don't have to wait until the final release date to check it out. Microsoft has been releasing public preview builds, each one a little bit closer to the final version. Anyone can get and install those builds by first becoming part of Microsoft's Windows Insider Program,...
  • 5 Unintended Consequences of Windows 10 Upgradegate

One thing that really annoys us about Windows 10 is Microsoft’s aggressive upgrade strategy. Steve Jobs famously said “people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” Microsoft must think this is true for Windows 10. And so its developers keep finding new ways to trick Windows 7 and 8 users into upgrading because surely they will like Windows 10 once the see it. Or they’ll just surrender. ... Microsoft acts as if its goal for 1 billion Windows 10 users supersedes the company’s responsibility for its existing Windows customers. This reckless battle has unintended consequences that...
  • Even in remotest Africa, Windows 10 nagware ruins your day: Update burns satellite link cash

When you're stuck in the middle of the Central African Republic (CAR) trying to protect the wildlife from armed poachers and the Lord's Resistance Army, then life's pretty tough. And now Microsoft has made it tougher with Windows 10 upgrades. The Chinko Project manages roughly 17,600 square kilometres (6,795 square miles) of rainforest and savannah in the east of the CAR, near the border with South Sudan. Money is tight, and so is internet bandwidth. So the staff was more than a little displeased when one of the donated laptops the team uses began upgrading to Windows 10 automatically, pulling...

Microsoft’s Windows 10 nagware campaign has entered a new phase, with all options to evade or escape an upgrade finally blocked. Recently, Microsoft’s policy had been to throw up a dialogue box asking you whether you wanted to install Windows 10. If you clicked the red “X” to close the box – the tried-and-tested way to make dialogue boxes vanish without agreeing to do anything – Microsoft began taking that as permission for the upgrade to go ahead. Now Microsoft is changing gears. It has eliminated the option to re-schedule a chosen upgrade time once you’ve confirmed it while also...
  • Microsoft starts pushing Windows 10 upgrades to users

A number of Windows 7 users were taken by surprise this weekend when their operating systems started to automatically upgrade to Windows 10, causing hardware and software issues for some. Problems reported by users included hardware drivers no longer working after the upgrade, software incompatibilites, and users getting large bills for using several gigabytes of cellular data. Microsoft copped flak last September for quietly downloading Windows 10 components onto users' computers in preparation for a later upgrade, taking up storage space and eating into data caps. The company has since published instructions for users who want to opt out of...
  • Windows patch KB 3139929: When a security update is not a security update

If Microsoft's documentation is correct, installing Patch Tuesday's KB 3139929 security update for Internet Explorer also installs a new Windows 10 ad-generating routine called KB 3146449. Many people -- present company included -- feel that putting an ad generator inside a security patch crosses way over the line. In fact, you have to ask yourself if there are any lines any more. Microsoft lays it all out in black and white in its inimitable, most obfuscatory way. This month's MS16-023 security patch for Internet Explorer, KB 3139929, says: This security update resolves several reported vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. The most...

The March roll-up update for Windows 10 appears to be causing headaches for users, some of whom have been left with computers that don't boot up after the patch has been applied. Microsoft issued the update on March 2 Australian time and users who installed it via Windows Update soon after started complaining of problems. Some experienced extremely long start-up times, with their devices taking over an hour to reach the user account login prompt. Others said they were forced to boot from USB thumb drives with an earlier installation version of Windows 10 and attempt startup repair. Also reported...

Microsoft PC users be alert. I was notified Tuesday of an important Windows 7 update. It turned out it was an update to install the Windows 10 upgrade app on Windows 7 (and maybe 8 and 8.1) machines, KB 3035583. I thought it might have been the earlier upgrade from last fall, but it was released February 23, 2013 with some file updates from February 17. I have a sticky note on my monitor with this MS update number (and some others) and when I receive notice of Windows updates I check the list. In this instance, I immediately hid...

If you have Chrome as the default browser on your Windows 10 computer, you'd better check to make sure Microsoft didn't hijack it last week and set Edge as your new default. The same goes for any PDF viewer: A forced cumulative update also reset PDF viewing to Edge on many PCs. Do you use IrfanView, Acdsee, Photoshop Express, or Elements? The default photo app may have been reset to -- you guessed it -- the Windows Photos app. Music? Video? Microsoft may have swooped down and changed you over to Microsoft Party apps, all in the course of last...

If you're running Windows 7 or 8.1 on a computer that isn't attached to a domain, you're no doubt familiar with the "Get Windows 10" ads that try to convince you -- sometimes subtly, sometimes forcefully -- to install Windows 10. Microsoft's intrusive campaign has drawn much well-deserved ire among Windows customers. I think it represents a new low in Microsoft marketing -- right down there in the Scroogled end of the gene pool. Back in August, Microsoft posted KB 3080351, a discussion of new Group Policy settings and two obscure registry entries -- DisableOSUpgrade and ReservationsAllowed -- that, taken...

The upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10 was impacted by several significant app or hardware compatibility issues, and in some cases, Microsoft even recommended users to delay the move for a little bit longer until all these problems were fixed. One of the hardware compatibility bugs that were experienced by a big number of users concerns the Broadcom Virtual Wireless Adapter, which was unable to work with Windows 10, and that, according to a prompt showing up before the upgrade, could block users from connecting to wireless networks. The message was first displayed in June, soon after...

Only select customers to receive uncapped OneDrive. Microsoft has abandoned plans to offer unlimited cloud storage to all OneDrive for Business users, with only customers of a certain scale and on certain plans now set to receive the upgrade. Unlimited OneDrive storage for all business customers was promised by Microsoft in October 2014, and scheduled to arrive this year. But following through with the promise has proved difficult for Microsoft. Users of the OneDrive consumer service had the option removed in November this year alongside reductions in the storage amounts offered with free plans, after Microsoft complained that subscribers were...

Windows 10 has lots going for it, but it's all the better with these fixes Windows 10 may Microsoft's finest operating system yet, but it needed to be. Microsoft is being assaulted from all angles: by OS X on desktop, iOS and Android on handhelds, and consoles for gaming (in this last case, ironically by itself with the Xbox One). Windows 10's positive reception – as well as a lot of glowing reviews – will have come as a relief to Redmond's anxious developers. But despite a long period of public testing, a fair number of Windows 10 problems remain...
