Only select customers to receive uncapped OneDrive.

Microsoft has abandoned plans to offer unlimited cloud storage to all OneDrive for Business users, with only customers of a certain scale and on certain plans now set to receive the upgrade.

Unlimited OneDrive storage for all business customers was promised by Microsoft in October 2014, and scheduled to arrive this year.

But following through with the promise has proved difficult for Microsoft.

Users of the OneDrive consumer service had the option removed in November this year alongside reductions in the storage amounts offered with free plans, after Microsoft complained that subscribers were over-using the service to back up large amounts of data.

If you trust MS, I’d like to speak to you. Bring your checkbook.

My understanding is that they couldn’t meet SLAs due to the sheer volume of data some companies were saving or planning to save. We initially looked at MS for mail journaling/archiving, but once we told them we were averaging 60 TB per year, they quickly changed their tune.

They tried to sell us on Office 365 when we were looking for a mail archive solution, but when we got into the details of how it would have to be implemented and maintained it became apparent it wasn't really designed for that and it was going to be square peg in a round hole.

You also lose some control over things like access to protocol and diagnostic logs that can frustrate troubleshooting.

The salesman tried to pitch it as being just like having your own servers on-premises, but it's not.

Only stupid people use cloud storage. Disks are cheap, data is private.

You can do a hybrid deployment with both on-prem and cloud-based systems and storage. I work in the financial industry, and Microsoft’s cloud offerings are, unfortunately, not PCI compliant.
