Based on a true story - In April, 2004, casualties mount in Iraq. At Quantico, choices focus on increasing troop strength or only replacing casualties. Lt. Col. Mike Strobl crunches numbers. Stung by his superior's rejection of his recommendation because he lacks recent combat experience, Strobl volunteers for escort duty, accompanying the remains Pfc. Chance Phelps, killed at 19. From Dover to Philadelphia by hearse, from there to Minneapolis and on to Billings by plane, and then by car to Phelps' Wyoming home - person after person pays respects. Kind words, small gifts, and gratitude are given Strobl to deliver...

For two and a half minutes near the end of "Taking Chance," the new HBO movie about the body of a young Marine returned home for burial, there is no sound except for the salute of the riflemen and the Wyoming wind battering the flags that stand at half mast as the shattered remains of PFC Chance Phelps are placed at rest. The silence amounts to perhaps the most eloquent statement Hollywood has yet made about the Iraq War. Its main competition is an earlier scene in the same movie. Driving along a country road behind an SUV carrying the...

Taking Pictures Of Chance http://crosshairs.archangelsandwitticism.com/2009/03/09/taking-pictures-of-chance.aspx Even with Gates' stipulation that it will be left up to the families of the deceased whether or not the media will be allowed to view the coffins of their loved ones, it was wrong to lift the ban.

'Taking Chance' -- A Look at the Real Price of Freedom Posted by Bobby Eberle February 26, 2009 at 7:57 am President Obama unveils his proposed budget for FY 2010 on Thursday. Several news outlets already have summaries, and the bullet items paint a grim picture of massive government spending and the return of higher taxes. Obama will be pushing his plan for universal health care. That means the taxpayers will now be in the business of providing health care for all. It's just too much for me to take today, so I'm going to take a different turn. We...

Attention must indeed be paid, as Arthur Miller wrote of quite a different character, and respect must be shown. "Taking Chance" gives us all the opportunity to render honor.

Did you watch “Taking Chance” on HBO? If not, you missed a sensitive, well-written, well-acted film that was pro-military and pro-American. You would do well to see it when it is rebroadcast. There is no surprise ending. The surprise is that the film was made at all.

In a film completely devoid of action and sparse with its dialogue, this is a stunningly moving story and a great achievement for HBO films and director Ross Katz. Marine Lt. Colonel Mike Strobl (played by Kevin Bacon) volunteers to escort the body of a fallen Lance Corporal, Chance Phelps, back to his final resting place in Wyoming. Strobl, a Gulf War vet, nevertheless carries guilt for not volunteering for Afghanistan or Iraq when his fellow officers did. Based on the journal Strobl kept as he escorted the body, the story carefully traces the exceptional care and concern for the...

* TELEVISION * FEBRUARY 19, 2009, 8:46 P.M. ET GUARD OF HONOR By DOROTHY RABINOWITZ It was impossible to imagine, beforehand, all the ways a film like "Taking Chance" (Saturday, 8-9:30 p.m. EST, on HBO) could work its power. There are no conflicts, no warring sides, no mysteries of character -- the usual stuff of drama. The story's outcome is clear from the beginning. Yet it's no less clear that "Taking Chance" is not only high drama, but a kind that is, in the most literal way, breathtaking -- watching parts of it can make breathing an effort, and those...
