24 minutes ago AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Dutch F-16s escorted a Northwest Airlines flight bound for India back to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Wednesday, and authorities detained several passengers for questioning, an airport spokeswoman said. The pilot of the aircraft radioed Schiphol for permission to return and a military escort as it was flying over Germany shortly after leaving Amsterdam, said spokeswoman Pamela Kuypers. Rick Hirs, a spokesman for the customs police at Schiphol, said it was not clear why the plane had returned. "We don't know yet. We are interviewing passengers and crew members," he said. Hirs said nobody on...

Amsterdam Airport Fire Kills 11 AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A fire roared through a prison complex at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Thursday, killing 11 illegal immigrants awaiting deportation and injuring 15 other people, authorities said. The nationalities of the dead were not immediately known. "They were illegal aliens waiting to be extradited to their countries of origin," said Immigration Service spokesman Martin Bruinsma. "We are still busy trying to confirm their identities." The prison block on the east side of Europe's fourth largest airport is surrounded by a 10-foot fence and barbed wire. Set up in 2002, it is used to...

At least 10 people have died, and 15 are injured and in hospital, after a fire set buildings ablaze at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. The blaze broke out soon after midnight in a detention centre at the airport, the main air hub of the Netherlands. The Dutch news agency ANP reported that it was not contained for several hours, and said the death toll could rise. The building where the fire started houses people who are awaiting deportation from the Netherlands.

WHEN Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician, collected his post from the letterbox on Wednesday he got an unpleasant surprise. Among the bills and junk mail was a letter addressing him as “ugly dog”. It told him he would soon be beheaded. It was an unnerving way to start the day. Only 24 hours earlier Theo van Gogh, the film maker who had often attacked radical Muslims, had been riding along on his bicycle when a Muslim fanatic first shot and then butchered him on a busy street with the nonchalance of an abattoir worker.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A British Airways flight from Berlin to London has made an unscheduled landing at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport as a security precaution, the airline says. The aircraft was escorted by two Dutch air force F-16 fighter planes after the pilot requested the landing, officials said. "At the moment there are no more details of the specific threat," BA spokeswoman Sophie Greenyer said. "All passengers have disembarked and have been taken to a part of the airport for security screening." Authorities were also checking the plane, flight 983, police said. Schiphol, one of Europe's busiest international airports, is on...

Customs at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport have been using United States officials to help check the travel documents of people flying to the US. The Americans are called in if the authenticity of the passport or visa is in doubt. The collaboration is meant to prevent people being sent back upon arrival in the US, because their documents are not in good order. The US inspectors say that several people with false travel documents have been detained in the Netherlands since they commenced duties there.

RIJSWIJK, Saturday - Justice Minister Jan Piet Hein Donner's policy of taking no action anymore against cocaine smugglers at Schiphol airport applies to all couriers carrying less than 3 kilograms. They will not be arrested, fined or tried. Confidential sources confirmed on Friday that Donner has doubled the already controversial threshold of 1.5 kilos to 3 kilos of cocaine. Whether the drugs have been swallowed or hidden in suitcases does not matter; they will be confiscated and the courier released. Foreigners will be sent back by the next plane, but couriers from the Netherlands Antilles may stay in the Netherlands....
  • Schiphol to test electronic ID system

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport plans to carry out tests with an electronic identification system which reads faces or fingerprints. If it is successful, passengers will no longer have to display their passports. The airport is currently in discussion with the Dutch foreign ministry. The United States wants electronic ID checking in place at all international airports by the end of next year, but Schiphol does not believe this deadline is realistic for Europe. A small group of frequent flyers already makes use of an iris-scan facility at Schiphol, but this too would be replaced by the new system.
