BBC ^ | October 26, 2005 | BBC

At least 10 people have died, and 15 are injured and in hospital, after a fire set buildings ablaze at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The blaze broke out soon after midnight in a detention centre at the airport, the main air hub of the Netherlands.

The Dutch news agency ANP reported that it was not contained for several hours, and said the death toll could rise. The building where the fire started houses people who are awaiting deportation from the Netherlands.

The BBC says the fire broke out "shortly after midnight" (local time one presumes) and it's now past 5 AM there, yet there is nothing about it I can find on the net or on Radio Netherlands. Strange.

I wonder if any of their peaceful muslim population was involved in this?

Whoa...hold these comments.
This was obviously an accidental fire started by a religious exercise conducted by the Religion of Peace!

Quick, call the ACLU and the UN to make sure the fire starters religious rights weren't violated!

De Telegraaf says it was mostly druggies and what Babelfish translated as "resistance workers", whatever that is.

Schiphol and Belfast. My two favorite airports.

I'm a sucker for sub-machine guns.

From Radio Netherlands web site's English news page:

10 die in Dutch airport blaze

At least ten people have died and 15 people have been injured in a fire in prison cells at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. Guards and customs officials were among the injured. The fire broke out shortly after midnight and spread rapidly. It is not yet known what caused the blaze, which was brought under control just after three o'clock.

The cells housed mainly drugs smugglers, illegal immigrants and people refused entry to the Netherlands. There were 43 inmates in the part of the building which caught fire. Some prisoners have been taken to jails in Rotterdam and Zeist: no prisoners appear to have escaped during the incident.

"resistance workers", whatever that is.

Try the word 'terrorist' for a translation, and see if the sentence makes sense.

"resistance workers"

Hmmm, perhaps this was some sort of "work accident".

"resistance workers"

"work accident"

Where's OSHA when you need them? We need to make sure that "resistance workers" and "Personal Explosives Implementation Personnel" have safe working conditions. Keep them free of dangerous chemicals and second hand smoke.
