Amsterdam's Schiphol airport plans to carry out tests with an electronic identification system which reads faces or fingerprints. If it is successful, passengers will no longer have to display their passports. The airport is currently in discussion with the Dutch foreign ministry.
The United States wants electronic ID checking in place at all international airports by the end of next year, but Schiphol does not believe this deadline is realistic for Europe. A small group of frequent flyers already makes use of an iris-scan facility at Schiphol, but this too would be replaced by the new system.
