Four US paramedics accused of racially profiling and failing to provide medical care to a dying woman face a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday. Crystle Galloway's mother says medics assumed the Tampa, Florida, family could not afford the ambulance cost. The 30-year-old's mother drove her to hospital instead. Ms Galloway slipped in to a coma after suffering a presumed stroke, and died five days later. Hillsborough County officials have already accepted responsibility. The incident occurred early on the morning of 4 July this year, days after Ms Galloway had given birth by Caesarean section. Her mother, Nicole Black, called 911 after...

Paramedics took nearly a half hour to reach a stricken 62-year-old man, who later died, because they were told to wait for a police escort as a result of a protest over police brutality in downtown Berkeley, city records show. It would have taken just a couple of minutes for Berkeley firefighters to drive from Station No. 2 on Berkeley Way to Alvin Henry Jones Jr., who had collapsed near an elevator at an apartment complex at 2175 Kittredge St. on the evening of Dec. 7. But hundreds of people had gathered downtown to protest against police killings of unarmed...

If pouring rubbing alcohol on your chest and lighting it on fire sounds like a bad idea, you're on the right track. A 15-year-old boy in Kentucky had to learn the hard way, however, after he attempted a stunt called the "fire challenge" that's been popping up on sites like Facebook and YouTube. "I just poured alcohol on it, and lit it, and it just automatically went and burst," the teenager, who suffered second-degree burns, tells WKYT-TV. (snip) "Unbearable," the teen says. "Literally after it got put out it was already blistering."

CARMEI TZUR, West Bank (JTA) -- Yana Kisluk tosses her long ponytail over one shoulder and adjusts her M-16 over the other. The pretty 21-year-old, who wears diamond stud earrings and perfect eye makeup, looks like any other young Israeli doing her compulsory military service. As a paramedic in the Israel Defense Forces, however, Kisluk belongs to a small group of Israeli soldiers whose job is to provide care for Palestinians rather than simply defend against them. On a recent morning, Kisluk’s team of two paramedics and a driver get a call about a newly arrested Palestinian prisoner who says...

Columbus questions whether it needs paramedics City panel suggests returning to cheaper basic emergency medical care Sunday, March 22, 2009 8:43 PM By Suzanne Hoholik THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH A committee charged with finding ways for Columbus to save money has recommended that the city return to a basic emergency medical system. The last time the Columbus Division of Fire provided only basic-level care was in 1968. Since then, Columbus has provided advanced life support to anyone who calls 911 for medical attention, whether a patient needs it or not. Basic care mostly involves stabilizing injuries before a patient is transported....

When a 73-year-old Londoner collapsed at a betting shop on New Year's Eve afternoon, his luck had run out – thanks to European Union rules that required two nearby ambulance crews to be kept on their 30-minute breaks. A paramedic arrived by rapid-response car in a matter of minutes to the shopping center where the unnamed senior was stricken and began caring for the man. Witnesses say he made desperate calls on his cell phone in an attempt to have an ambulance dispatched. The London Ambulance Service, which has launched an investigation of the incident, confirmed that two crews were...

A US dog has won an award for saving her owner's life by dialling a phone number that alerted emergency services to her owner's diabetic seizure. Belle the beagle triggered a call to an ambulance crew by biting on her owner, Kevin Weaver's, mobile phone. The dog was trained to detect potential diabetic attacks by licking and sniffing Mr Weaver's nose to check his blood sugar levels and pawing him. Belle resorted to dialling for help when Mr Weaver fell unconscious. The dog used her teeth to press the number nine key, which the phone was programmed to interpret...

Paramedics are at an increased risk of suffering from post-traumatic stress, but not enough is known about how best to help them cope, an emergency medical services conference heard Friday. The first phase of a three-year study into the stress of first-responders was presented at the Emergency Medical Services Chiefs of Canada conference in Dartmouth, N.S., on Friday. The study is looking at prevention and management of post-traumatic stress disorder. While post-traumatic stress affects seven to eight per cent of the general population, it's up to three times more likely among paramedics, lead researcher Vince Savoia said. The Tema Conter...

D.C. paramedics say their supervisors directed them to use expired medications this month because fresh supplies were unavailable. The medications included such lifesaving drugs as epinephrine, which is used to treat asthmatics and allergic reactions, and nitroglycerin, which is used for heart-attack victims. For two hours on Monday, an ambulance sat in the parking lot of Sunnybrook hospital's emergency department with a suspected SARS case on board. In the back of the ambulance, two paramedics kept a close eye on the deteriorating and contagious patient, all within the tiny 1.5-by-2.5-metre isolation unit on wheels. The paramedics had called ahead to tell the hospital to prepare a negative pressure room and be ready for this patient. It didn't matter. They were forced to sit and wait. "There's a lot running through your mind," said paramedic Marty Bulai, who had a similar incident at Scarborough...
