SAN DIEGO -- According to an exclusive 10News/Survey USA poll, if the election were held today, Gov. Gray Davis would be recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger would be elected governor. Of 493 people statewide who say they are "certain" to vote, two-thirds say they will vote to recall Davis from office. <p>The race is on for governor of the Golden State. New polls show that 64 percent of Californians are prepared to recall Gov. Gray Davis, setting up the vote for his replacement. Last week, former President Bill Clinton &#8212; who, of course, almost lost his job when he was impeached &#8212; offered Mr. Davis advice on how to keep his own job, and the governor is expecting the Clintons to campaign for him. We are not convinced the former first couple will squander any political capital to embrace this dead man walking, and it probably wouldn't matter even if they did. To put it mildly, Mr. Clinton has never had the Midas touch when it comes to helping other Democrats get elected. That, however, does not mean fellow Democrats aren't coming out shooting.</p>

Gray Davis called the recall an "insult."</p> <p>In a poll released by KABC-TV in L.A. last night, 66 percent who said they were "certain to vote" in the historic Oct. 7 California recall backed the removal of Davis, a Democrat, while 32 percent opposed it. Of the replacement candidates, Schwarzenegger beat Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the ballot's only major Democrat, by 51 percent to 17 percent, according to the phone poll taken on the weekend.</p>
